I just bought my first XJ already lifted...I know that it has 2 inch coil spacers,2 inch blocks in the back... and i also notice that it has rough country lower control arms... I'm not sure if the springs or Leaf springs are after market or not... To make a long story short... I put on 31x10.50R15 BFG MT's---they BARELY clear the bottom of the front fenders... they scrub if i turn hard right... I see jeeps all the time with 3 inch lifts and 31's with 6 inchs of room before rubbing... What up!!!???

Dude, I feel sorry for you for asking this question. There are freaks on this forum about doing a search. I personally think they are trying to compensate for something. Anywho, I run 31's and a 4.5" rustys. I have no fender (metal) trimming, but I do have some flare (plastic) trimming. If I stuff real hard I will still rub. If I run 33's with the current setup I will have to trim metal. The back is ok, but the front still runs pretty good.

BTW I am running a 4.5" lift with 35's not much trimming required...

You probably have sagging springs man, 2" kits arent supposed to clear but 30's anyway, and if their saggin that bad, then I'd invest in lift springs all around, get rid of those spacers.

If I sit in a flat parking lot... turn the wheels all the way to the right or left... the rear of the tire is less than an inch from the plastic fender.... Flexxed all the way out it doesnt rub but there is no chance of 33's which is what i want!!! Just curious... Keep in mind i have 15x10 wheels with 3.75bs

I agree with Zac. If you have the money, get new springs. They will be designed for the lift, and they flex quite a bit better too.

I have a 93 with 3.5" Tuff country Lift and run 31's. I have plenty of room. check springs and leafs for sagging.

rustys leafs are already really soft, adding blocks on top of that would not be good

Buddy runs a 4.5" with 31`s with no rubbing......you probably only have a 2" or 3"

ok, heres the thing that gets me... blocks..they are in contact with the same area of metal as if they sat on the bracket on the axle.. only difference is the height... nothin that would change the spring in any way

What ya'll think? Any way i should be able to tell if they were stock springs in the front or not?

i got a 4.5" with 35's and minor rubbing.. ofcourse your not gonna rubb with 31's on a 4.5" lift

nice rig, got any pics of the spacers up front, see the size?

Lowrange2
November 16th, 2006, 20:16
Unfortunatly no i dont have a better picture and no i can't afford the long are right now...Just the spring pack... although i could see how the blocks could add leverage to the rear end... kinda like the taller somthing is the more likely it is to tip over...So i may consider replacing the blocks with shakles...I'd like to see some pics of rigs that sit about the same height as mine with 31's... I'm fixxin the chop the front of the fenders to add a winch bumper but that not even where its rubbing at... i dont really see how i can trim the fender where its rubbing at... UH

With the weight of the jeep on flat ground the rear leafs are pretty much flat!!! Are they supposed to have much more arc? Or no? I know the lifted ones do but i am assuming these are stock... Ah!!

it changes/adds to the leverage that the axle puts on the springs, contributing to axle wrap and fatiguing

Measure from the center of your hubs to the bottom of the flare. Stock measurements are 17.5" front and 17.0" rear

If you have stock rear leafs I wouldn't be surprised if they were shot. My 2000 only had about 30,000mi on it when I bought it and the rears were gone. No curve in them at all, perfectly flat. Even with the vehicle empty.

I meant to take more pictures today but got sidetracked... I measured from the center of my hub to the bottom of the fender and it was 20 inches... so thats 4 inchs from stock... and the rear leafs are flat... so im def gettin the new lift...

There's no way that 31's will rub on 4" of lift when the vehicle is sitting flat. Did you measure from the center of the hub to the bottom of the fender flare?

Also, ditch them blocks asap.

If you want a budget lift, buy another set of stock rear leafs and meld the leaf packs into your own. Cut the eyes off the main leafs of the purchased leafs and insert those under the main leafs on your vehicle. Add in another two leaves and you will have about 3" of lift with a nice stock feeling ride. Don't forget to adjust your bumpstops to compensate for the lift. This will save your shocks (which should also be replaced). If you want a bit more on the front, you can replace your coils with ZJ V8 coils, which will add another 1.5".

The search function is your friend. To the guy who questions the search police, consider that every thread on the same subject that gets put up here just adds to the mess of threads on the same subject when searching in the future...

the reason they rub when you turn is because your tires are hitting the control arms

change your rims and get a different back spacing

i have 31's with 1" coil spacers and block and they rub the control arms when i trun but they dont rub when i flex. BUT i have easily cut 3 or 4 inches front and rear

How do you figure?
2" coil spacers in the front, and 2" blocks in the rear, that equals 2"s all around... right?

IN the end my point was that i KNOW that i have 2 inch coil spacers and 2 inch blocks! I was trying to figure out if i had after market leaf and coil srings as well since i DO have after market rough coutry control arms... Yeah i was wrong... It's 3 inchs taller than stock by measuring the distance from hub to fender! I'm just gunna take off the MFin fenders!

rustys leafs are already really soft, adding blocks on top of that would not be good

FWIW I have the Rusty's 6.5" leaf packs in my 96 and they are to damn stiff!! No flex what so ever. On the other hand the 3" packs from Rusty's flex pretty easy. HTH.

Kim.

I've got his 4" packs, though I think he may have redone the design since, but they are entirely too soft, coupled with 4.5" xj re coils my crap is just tippy. Gonna be rebuilding the leafs sometime soon.

Ive got 30" BFG AT with no lift and I have yet to rub to the point where it is annoying. Steering clearance is just fine as well. The Old Man Emu site says that their 2 inch lift will fit 31s with no problem. Im plannng on a 2" lift and having 31" Mickey thompson MTX. If you have a problem with the rubbing get .75 spaceer and an extended shackle
