Dear Friends:

Surely you have heard the shout of thanks coming from the Blue Ribbon Coalition's office when we received your recent donation of $5,000. Your generous financial support will go far in our efforts to preserve access and promote responsible OHV recreation. Thank you!

Your contributions will keep the Coalition strong and working at "Preserving Our Natural Resources FOR the Public Instead Of FROM the Public."

Sincerely,

Greg Mumm
Executive Director
BlueRibbon Coalition

P.S. The BlueRibbon Coalition is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

once again had the opportunity attended the Annual North America Motorized Recreation Council Meeting held at SEMA in Las Vegas this year. NAMRC is a meeting of groups who represent different interests with the same goal in mind, keeping access to public lands open. The Blue Ribbon Coalition, CORVA, ORBA, The Utah 4wd Association, California 4wd Association, The Washington Snowmobile Association, The Bureau of Land Management, and SEMA are just some of the organizations that were in attendance. The meeting was moderated by Del Albright.

At the meeting, there was an interesting presentation made by Jeff Knoll from ORBA that I wanted to share with you. Of the 16 Westernmost states, the Federal government owns 54.9% of the land. Heres a partial breakdown for you: the Federal government owns 84.48% of Nevada, 36.63% of Colorado, 45.3% of California, 48.06% of Arizona, 57.45% of Utah, 30.33% of Washington, and 41.77% of New Mexico.

Now let's take California as an example to use it for further breakdown. In 1976, there was approximately 25 million acres of California Desert. At that time, 50% of it was to be for public multiple use under the control of the BLM. In 1980, 8% of those 25 million acres was set aside as wilderness, leaving just 42% for public multiple use. In 1994, that 8% set aside for wilderness was increased to 25%. That left us only 25% of those 25 million acres for public multiple use. Then in 2007, the BLM was forced to further expand that wilderness to accommodate expanded endangered species lists. This now left us with only 12.5% of that original 25 million acres open for multiple use. If Johnson Valley is take over by the Marine Corps, this number will be even further reduced.

Why is is this important? Because these same reductions to public land-use have been occurring all across the country.

A bill introduced to Congress a couple days ago would put into law a Clinton administration rule that put nearly 60 million acres of national forests off limits to most logging, road building, and motorized recreation. While it faces significant resistance in the House of Representatives, it is still something we all need to keep an eye on.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and remember that there are lots of things that you can do to help. Being a club member is just one of them. We all need to do our part to help to protect the access to the land we enjoy using.

I will be updating this with new and interesting land-use info/topics on a regular basis. If you have something you would like to see shared with our forum community, send me a pm.
