One lens for all applications is a great theory, but there is usually a trade-off in functionality and image quality with a one-lens-for-all lens.

I've been happy with my Sigma DC 17-70mm f 2.8/4.5 and it is my workhorse lens. It has performed well for the past 4+ years. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...eywords=sigma+lens+Sigma+DC+17-70mm+f+2.8/4.5

As my kids have grown to teens, I've found myself shooting more events in low-light such a theater and concerts, as well as fast action sports. I needed the ability to zoom and shoot quality images in these conditions, so I rented a Canon 70-200 L (pro) lens a few times and loved the results, just not the $2k+ price tag.
2 years agao, as I researched for a lower price point lens that still offer L-comparable performance, I found the reviews on the Sigma DG HSM 70-200mm f 2.8 APO http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma_70-200_2p8_os_c16 to be highly rated.

I was searching the local online classifieds one day and ran across this exact lens, new in box, for $1200, which at the time, saved me about $300, so I bought it and have been very happy with its performance and image quality. Price has come down in the last year, so you can pick one up in that $ range today.

BTW, I have a Canon USM 70-300mm f4 /5.6 lens that is in great shape that I'd sell for $75+shipping. It's a great lens and shoots nice images in well-lit sports and wildlife/portrait settings.

About a year go, one of the residents at the apt complex where I work started getting 12"x12"x1" packages (received at the office) probably got 20 or more of them from various on-line shops.

They were laser-discs. Some people do still use them.
