Dirt Bound Offroad Trailer - Build Log

that sucks. have you thought about using plastic or aluminum? still light, but a little less prone to mold issues.

I'm sure the issue has less to do with the wood and more to do with the fact it was unfinished and not yet properly sealed.

Yup, If I finished it properly or covered it the box would have survived...

Here is the post from expo on the V2.0 of the trailer.

So i finally got started on V2.0 of my offroad camping trailer.

My first attempt for a offroad trailer was more of a teardrop trailer, unfortunately I got busy and never finished the roof so it leaked water and after about a year it was rotted. So I tore down the box and kept the frame, this is my second attempt and my original plan...

I picked up a Roof Top Tent from a local Lost Jeeps member, and that pushed me to start working on the trailer again.

The tent needs a little work but other than that it is in good shape, mainly needs a new mattress made, a few rips on the rain fly and the wood floor needs new braces.

The plan for the trailer is to have a slide out kitchen, and refrigerator, a 26 gallon water tank with instant hot heater and 20 gallons of fuel capacity.

The kitchen will have 2 burners, a sink and a slide out BBQ.

Here is where I am at so far.

Wow.... having just found this thread I'm a little...disappointed. LOL! Got all excited seeing the build then reading the wood idea got scrapped. Feel like I got stuck watching a soap opera. haha! Can't wait to see how it goes from here though. :)
And is that the XJ to an MJ parked next to it? Damn I love that build.

Yup, that's the XJ.

I did retain some wood on this project, just got some 3/4" exterior grade plywood for the floor. it will be sealed and painted then bolted in.

I got some new foam for a new mattress and made a new cover for it. I mounted it to the jeep and tested it out and I slept so well... Ill never use a ground tent again haha.

This morning I headed to the steel yard with a bunch of sizes and had them cut up 2 4x10ft 16g steel sheets, $160 later I had my steel for the sides.

The front box I folded the top lip. (It helps I have a shop full of metal working tools.)

The sides I welded on the inside so once it is done you will see the frame work.

I just like how it looks haha...

tomorrow I gotta put a few more braces in the top before welding it on, then I need to make a bolt on rack that the tent will attach to.

Ill see if I have enough diamond plate to do the fenders, and I need to decide what to do with the round tail lights.

Well today was a little bit of a late start, got cut off in the morning and had a minor fender bender so that delayed me getting to the shop. Luckily it was minor damage and not my fault ha...

So I got the fender skins cut, formed and tacked, took the trailer around the business park and it is nice to be able to see it in the mirrors.

View from behind. I still need to design some tail light holders.

I thought you were all done with plywood as a choice for flooring, siding, roofing or any where at all? Traversing creeks, rivers, mud or snow covered roads or traveling thru winter whether will cause havoc on that flooring even with rhino coating. I skinned a ramp on a trailer and completely glued and sealed the skin and edges and water still found it's way thru marine plywood after 6 years!

I put in a few more hours over the last two weekends, I would have gotten more done this weekend but my neck and shoulders are acting up and pretty sore so I took it easy.

Doors welded just waiting for skins and latches. Also mounted the RTT to the new rails on the roof.

Ceiling was reinforces and then tacked with a million tacks to the roof.

For something that is not going to see any direct load the ceiling bracing looks a bit overkill / heavy. It seems to me you could save a bit of weight there since the RTT is attached to rails that distribute the load for you.
