POWER Steering

It whines like crazy, especially when revved.

Any Ideas?[/QUOTE]

Well I just finished mine and it was fine for about 3 miles then started whining like that. Got home checked the fluid, No bubbles just hot as
hell:firedevil

Got a feeling the heat is the problem. I read somewhere that th WJ has a stock cooler for the PS. I'm gona get one and see if that fixes it.

Make since?

No sure didn't. I used the stock WJ fitting and had a hose made to fit it and tie in to my Steering box. Everything works good lots of power but just that anoying whine.

Now I'm wandering if it has to do with the other return hose being blocked? Talked to a mechanic at work he thought it sounded like the bypass valve was staying open. Maybe I;ll try and hook up the cooler I just bought to that fitting

Used or reman pump? Which fluid? I assume you bled the system-

I am in the middle of this myself. Figured while I have it out I should install the header, motor mounts, etc.

The ACE at Checkers busted my PS pulley... I should have taken the puller out of his hands and did it myself.

Good Luck-

Reman, Standard fluid once I get the cooler in I'll reflushand put in some synthetic.
Yup bled it twice and now air bubbles.

Anyone have photos of this install? I'm looking to replace my '00 XJ pump. Found a 2003 WJ with only 1000K on it - any way to determine what year WJ swaps into which year XJ?

this is not a swap I'd recomend I had to go back to a stock pump after 2 wj pumps in as many weeks. Plus the fittings are really hard to make work I had acustom hose made and then had to throw it away. Oh well lesson learned. I'd recommend a psc pump cost is only about 100 bucks more for that setup.

As long as the pump is out of 4.7 WJ it will work.

I am running this on my '99. Not sure if it was necessary, but I split the return line from the pump to feed both inlets on the reservoir.

Remove hub / fitting from WJ pump. (where high pressure line connects)
Remove hub / fitting from XJ pump and reinstall on WJ pump. (this will allow you to use your existing high pressure line)

I could take some pics if you like. Let me know specifically what you want to see.

I had thought I explained this but I guess not.

I have done some pretty tricky swaps before and I had thought this was an easy one. Apparently, if you are not comfortable about modifying something then you should stick to a bolt on replacement.

If anyone has questions on getting this to work I can be reached through my PM box here.

As previously stated. ANY 4.7L donor with hydraulic cooling fan will work. The secondary return line just gets capped.

As for high pressure fittings... you use the one off your old pump since it connects to your oem line. No parts needed.

When everything is set, you need to bleed the system. Any air in the system is going to cause excessive wear and noise.
I bleed the system by first filling the res all the way engine off. let it sit a few mins, then start it up... you need to saw the steering all the way lock to lock several times making sure the pump is full.

When you get it full. allow it to sit for a few hours or over night to allow the air bubbles a chance to purge from the fluid.
It will want to foam a lot when first filled. Same as any power steering pump swap.

nice mod! i dont mind give them a shot as there's lot of WJ at my local junk yard. howver my pump's working fine so im gonna use it til it die first

Could possibly be that my 01 has a differant HP fitting or something but mine didn't fit in the wj pump. I went to the JY and pulled several differant HP fittings couldn't get any of them to work.:dunno:

I bled it several times and still had the noise problem and also got very hot. The res was to hot to touch after a couple of miles of driving.

Not sure why but it sure didn't work for me. Sounds like it has worked for some but not me. Oh well

After reading this post i set out to do this swap on my 1990. I bought the reman pump from autozone pn 7145 with the tank. I found that the pumps are the same with the following exceptions: the mounting holes on the Grand's pump are smooth not threaded, the high pressure fitting is different but swapable from the old pump and the hole that the tank mounts is not the same between the pumps. You must use the GC tank. This swap can be done by swapping your high pressure fitting from the old pump to the Grand pump. You will have to find and use mouting bolts that run all the way through the front mounting bracket, through the pump and out the back of the mounting bracket. Also you will have to use the Grand's pulley because it has holes to run the mounting bolts through. If you use the old pulley you will have to pull the pulley every time you want to remove and install the pump. You will also have to use different high pressure hose do to the tank differences and don't forget to plug the second return to the tank. Hope this helps someone..... blaise

im doing this mod now and im really liking it so far. my ps pump was on its last groaning leg. i had a 99+ intake manifold and a durango box sitting in the garage so i took care of all three at the same time.

i noticed that the return line on the back of the tank is the same size nipple as our stock tank and as the return nipple on the box, but the lowest return line is larger. its also the same size as the cooler i will be installing as well as an in-line filter. i plan on running the return line to the smaller nipple at the back of the tank and then capping the larger one at the bottom of the tank. im pretty sure that it shoulnt be a problem, but if someone thinks it may be then let me know.

Just pulled one today from a 2000 4.7L V8 WJ at the JY today, but the radiator and fans were all missing, so I'm not positive it had the hydrolic fan, as there were no extra lines, any way to tell if I got the right one?

the resevoire will have two places to attach youre return line. i think a half inch, and a three eights... if my memory serves me right.. lol. i blocked off the three eigths return line and used the half inch one to allow for more flow... but it probably doesnt matter either way. i love this mod, i can turn the tires at idle when they are all jammed up on the trail. its great. but if your steering box is already leaking, nit will most likely leak worse under the higher pressure. im planning on putting in a 99 durango box.
