Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle Park

deadhead

NAXJA Forum User
Things are starting to come together for this exciting Off-Road venue in the Badger State.

In case you're not familiar with the Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle Park, Incorporated (WORVPI) was established in response to the Natural Resource Board mandate (July 2006) for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to begin research establishing at least one Motorized Recreation Area (MRA) here in the Badger State.

WORVPI is dedicated to providing economic development through a recreational venue which educates and encourages the principles of safe and responsible motorized recreation. With their sites set on exceeding the expectations of motorized trail enthusiasts and their families, WORVPI is pursuing development of a 10,000 acre OHV Park (MRA) in Northern Wisconsin (Forest County).

Operating as a non-profit corporation, the OHV Park will stimulate economic activity throughout Wisconsin and become a national destination for family vacations. The Park will provide off-road enthusiasts an opportunity to ride and extensive trail system ranging in challenges ranging from mild-to-wild. The Park will be designed to exceed the expectations of children, as well as the seasoned off-road veteran. Rocks, hills, mud…the Park will have everything the motorized recreationist is looking for in a family vacation destination.

Last year (2012), WORVPI contracted with the North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (NCWRPC) and the Creative Enterprise Center (CEC) at Ripon College to draft a Feasibility Report and Business Plan (respectively). The Business Plan is completed and has been delivered. The Feasibility Report (which will rank a list of potential environmentally responsible locations within Forest County) is expected to be delivered within the next couple of weeks.

These two vital first steps lay the foundation which will help assure the success of this project. If you'd like to learn more (and maybe even help support the project) visit their web site at www.WORVPI.org, or www.facebook.com/WORVPI, or www.twitter.com/WORVPI. Also, consider attending WORVPI's 2nd Annual Membership Meeting at the Potawatomi Carter Casino & Hotel on May 18th!

Ron,

This forum appears to have much, much more traffic then the Land Use Forum. I wanted to reach as many potential stakeholders as possible. The biggest bang for the buck (or post in this case).

This is a major project being spear-headed by the Wisconsin Off-Highway Vehicle Association (WOHVA). Read the recently published Milwaukee Journal Sentinel update below.

Forest County off-road-vehicle park proposed Article | Posted: March 24, 2013 By Rick Barrett

A park for off-road vehicles, with thousands of acres of trails for motorcycles and pickup trucks, has been proposed for Forest County as a national tourism destination. I think a lot of these 'environmentalists' confuse off roaders with mudders. People who off road tend to hold nature in high regard and are very careful about not damaging the area or littering it up whereas mudders tend to just come in, tear stuff up then leave.

The area this is proposed is way too far from me though so I can't foresee ever using it. It would be nice to get a trail going down at Bong in Racine. They already allow ATVs and whatnot but no jeeps AFAIK.

I've asked this a couple of times but I don't ever get an answer so I'll try again...

Will this be an off road park that is opened to the public or will this be like Mole Lake where you have to be a member of WOHVA to wheel it?

I would like to know this too!

It sounds all good, though I won't hold my breath either. There are a lot of Sierra-type folks scared away from this from experiences past with the Pipeline and McCaslin. (Though I don't remember why McCaslin closed, it may very well be unrelated to a land-use issue.)

Bottom line, off-road parks are an endangered species in Wisconsin. With the closing of McCaslin, the issues with Apple Valley and the dates of opening changing at the Pipeline, I wouldn't expect this to actually come to fruition.

I think McCaslin closed because of insurance reasons. I know the state is changing and I hope they do this. As long as the indians dont threaten to spear all the fish in retaliation there is a chance ;)

McCaslin was closed for many reasons.
New owners, Insurance, DNR, Trail Abuse... it all stacked up over a long time.
We almost lost it after the 1st sale. When the new owner died, that was the end of the trail.

Northwoods Overland closed due to insurance costs and life changes.

Most of the places that were open to wheeling 20 years ago, are now ATV trails or closed entirely. I blame the DNR and the Sierra Club.

I wish there was some place close to home to wheel.

I wish there was an entity in WI that was focused on preserving existing and expanding trails in WI.

I wish that the Department of Tourism and the Governor's office could understand that creating places to enjoy the outdoors from a Jeep are in their best interest.

The hand that I'm not wishing on is filling fast ;)

Each time I leave this lovely state to go recreate and spend money elsewhere just kills me.

Hey all of you that are not holding your breath, how about showing support by joining or donating to the cause if you aren't already? If we all have the mindset that it'll never happen, it probably won't. Here are some links to help you understand the progress that has already been made and the hard work it took to get there.

Oh, you must have mistaken us for a non-club user forum ;)

* This Chapter has donated more money to WOHVA than you realize.
* A number of the Wisconsin Members here are Member's of WOHVA.

John, I see you are a Member.
Welcome to the Club!

Great point Ron.

A number of the Wisconsin Members here are Member's of WOHVA.

Indeed. For many years too.

Still waiting to see a park open or an existing one saved...
