96- to 97+ Console Swap Write Up

I'm glad I found this. I scored a COMPLETE '97 parts rig and I'm gonna steal the console, e-brake, etc. EVERYTHING out of it and put into my '90.

Thanks for the info.

John

No problem man glad I could help. Let me know how the e-brake thing goes, I still haven't done mine yet.

Any idea if the seats and other interior parts like carpet will fit in a 96? Seems that was the year of the new floor, but I dunno for sure....

I like the look of it!

The seats and carpet I'm not sure about. I would imagine most of the interior trim would be swappable until you get back to the tailgate area.

I have a console (grey) that is missing the ashtray and shift bezels. Also have the ebrake handle. Somebody make me some reasonable offers and it's yours. my zip is 49330

Sorry to revive a dead thread but your pic host died :( also would a 93 ZJ Laredo console fit an 89 LTD? it seems to be mostly the same as the 97+XJ

Got a new console with the shifter, bracket, heating duct, and everything. Here's some links to how I fixed the weak heat in the rear. I cut off part of the old heating duct(the part that mates with the dash duct work), and melted it to the '97+ heating duct. EXCELLENT heat. I also melted a piece in where the air blew TO the old heating duct, so that the air would route straight into the new duct work. At any rate, it's easy to see how I did this by looking at the pictures.

Did you do the e-brake yet? My laziness(sp?) has overcome me, still haven't gotten around to it.

That ebrake should be hella easy to do. Just have a 1" piece of metal welded into the direction of where it should be then weld the handle to that. So you have kinda backwards "Z". Problem solved. :)

i havent bothered to rip apart my center console (again i mean) to look at the e-brake some, but how does the button work on the end of the brake? if its possible to simply bolt/weld an addition on to the existing brake mount that would be a great way to do it... but how would you get the button on the end to work in that position?

im realy interested in doing this swap, but utah law says the e-brake must be functional for the safety inspections. if someone has a write up on that part, that would be very apreciated.

I HAVE DONE THE EBRAKE

you DONT need to cut/weld/ghettorig anything. take the 97+ ebrake and bracket and it will BOLT INTO THE 96- location. all you need to do is slightly bend it about a half inch and put an extra screw through the body. it is cake. there is nothing to it.

I still plan on doing this. The interior of my XJ is currently completely gutted as I am waiting for the D&C Extreme cage kit to show up. Once that's installed I will be installing PRP seats and the '97+ console.
