What is the best way to straighten out a tie rod in the back country. thanks

If you have a come-along, you can tie it off to a tree, then use it to pull the bent rod straight. If you have the appropriate attachments, you could also use a hi-lift in the same way. You'll want to sleeve the tierod to get off the trail once it's straight -- the handle of a hi-lift works well for this.

Straighten as best you can, and put your spare on. If you've bent your spare, straighten as best you can, pull a tie rod end off (mark where the threads are so you can reinstall and keep it 'aligned') and slide (hammer, whatever) a high lift jack handle over the tie rod. Reinstalll tie rod end and put on the knuckles.

A. turn it so it bends down and then you can use a bottle jack and go up.
B. turn it so the bend points backwards and then use a strap and back off while someone else is watching you do so, so you don't overdo it.

Very good, I bent mine up in the rock garden @ Mineral basin wondering how to bend it back down. Sometimes the mind tries too hard to figure things out when something is so simple. Thanks all good advice guys.
