Bob and I are aching to do a GWNF run toward the end of september, maybe early october at the latest. Would anyone else be willin to come along and make a weekend of it? No definite dates yet, but the last weekend in september or the second weekend in october are my best two bets.

GWNF is the George Washington National forest, which is right outside Harrisonburg, VA. I'm not a guru on the trails out there, and would really appreciate if anyone who's more familiar could fill in the details, and maybe lead this trip. I'll organize, but I don't know much about the trails. They tend to be on the mild side, but there are certainly spots for the more hardcore of tastes. Thanks all

We should try to avoid that trail that had us trying to turn everyone around, although it was a good trail for the hardcore at the far end if the trees arent blocking the trail. Is there a trail map of the area?

I've heard good things about this place. Been thinking of taking a trip down to camp and just explore.

What kind of hardcore trails do you have down there? And what would it compare to paragon? I would like to get down there if my axles are done.

the trails up there are decent enough. dictum and kephart are the 2 hardest ones up there. the pic is from dictum. going up is a nice ledge that we usually have to pull rocks out of because people love to stack em there, then the end of kephart is a lot of fun. the link is to pics of both trails that a zj on 35's, me on 33's, daniel on 32's, and a cj8 on 33's. i dont think ill make the run but maybe. the VA4WDA poker run at oakridge is the 6th of october and im doing an axle swap between now and then so $$ will be tighter than....

So what are the dates? Anybody got them set yet. Ahem...as the newbie on the block, I would like to request a formal invitation. I am getting stoked about this trip as it will be my first (please be gentle) in the area. I am looking forward to meeting some folks from the area to go wheelin' with. If any of Jersey folks are driving down, perhaps we can hook up for the trip? :D

NOVEMBER!!!! That's too far away. I need to test out my new non rubbing fenders (hopefully) and my tera-low. I will still be up for this when it comes around though. I'm up for paragon anytime with any of you new jersey guys, or anyone else. I know October is still far away, but I have fall break coming after the first week of october. But if anyone has a better pick on dates, run them by, I'm sure I can make it on quite a few weekends. How old are you XJBroke, I think I read you were in the teens or somewhere around there. It'll be nice not to hang around a kid that acts like a kid instead of old guys that still act like kids.... , NAXJA's great. _nicko_

I may be going up with my brother and one of his friends on Saturday. So, if anyone is going, let me know and we can meet up. Hey guys
Im new to this about to send in my membership application, i've been talking to Skorpyo for a while.
For all of you guys in the blacksburg area i am up in Roanoke so we can all caravan up there.
What trails are we looking at down there?? I've been through dictum's w/ my buddies rover
my email is dmgritte@roanoke.edu
Hey everybody, sounds like a trip is being planned for sometime (Oct/Nov) for the GWNF. I'm in Richmond and a newbie, but would love to meet up with some people and check out the trails. I'll be keeping an eye on this board to see what date is decided. If anyone can get me directions to the meeting spot, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Here are the proposed final dates for this ride. November 2nd & 3rd. I'm hoping that by then I'll have my XJ lifted and ready to roll, but if not I'll be there riding shotgun or back seat with someone. Lets start to get a count of who's comin and who's not! Thanks all
I'm still interested and that weekend is clear for me. I hope I can join everybody.
Im definitly down!
What trials are we going to run?? i don't think BB XJ can run dictum's? The only parts of GWNF i've driven w/ my jeep are across the river, i've been through dictums in my buddies rover
I think a good meeting place is that gas station right off the exit of I-81
I just want to know what i can runw / my setup, 2 in BB, X-fer case (thanks Skorpyo) and a gast tank skid, 235 A/t's , front and rear tow points
David
I've got a 3" lift and I'm running 31's. I don't have any under body protection (yet) and I am lacking front tow points (may be able to get some on before Nov. 2). I have not tested out my truck, the lift is only a few weeks old. I don't know anything about the trails out there, and from the pictures that I have seen, I should wait until I have some under body protection before attempting those trails. Are there any novice trails? Bunny slopes for newbies? Any excuse to do some camping is fine by me, and meeting some people who are into this would be good too.
There are definlty traisl for us man!! its basically liek you go down Rt.33 on the left and right there are just trails and you can just go for miles on some of them!
Its tight, some of it is technical (dictums and another one) i have heard of peple winching in stacking rocks (Boooo!)
But there is definitly stuff we are capable of!
david
In addition is anyone going to be coming from south of harrisonburg??
I woudln't mind caravanning up there!
David
I assume that there will be some camping going on? Where are the campsites? Any idea on how much $ or is it backcountry/primitive camping? Where does everyone meet?
This trip is too far off, but my calendar is too packed prior to that weekend. I'm itching to try out my ride. I need to get some mud on the truck.
You had to choose the weekend of my B-day didn't you Tim :P Oh well, maybe I'll still be able to make it. By the end of this weekend I should be geared, lifted more, and locked in the rear. Still no sliders though. Anyway, I'd be coming from B-burg and would love to caravan even though it's only a 2 hour drive. The usual meeting place is McDorman's store, but I'm sure we could choose somewhere else if people don't like that. I know there's a guy named Daniel up there who's a local who has invited me to wheel w/ him more than once. He seems like a cool kid, so maybe he could be our "guide"? I'll keep checking back. Peace

Ary~ I'm up in Roanoke we can caravan up there!
Is the store that one liek right before you go through the pass into naer the trails?? That might be hard to find for the new people.
It may be easier to meet at the gas stattion right off of 81, plus then we can all gas up and stuff
As for camping its backcountry which = free!! So just bring your tent and gera, and soem food!
david
In addition, can everyone post their specs so i know what i am up against! heheh
David
dmgritte@roanoke.edu
I'll most likely head up on Fri night. I've done a fair amount of backpacking in that area, but after a while all the places kinda run together. Is there a large enough camping area for everyone? If so, thats where I'd like to be on Fri night and if someone can tell me where it is, that would be great. I'll meet up wherever the group decides, at the gas station, country store or trail access.
As for my specs, all I bring to the table is a 3" lift and some 31" tires. I have a rear tow hook for my 2" receiver on my recently replaced rear bumper. I managed to do a 360 on US-29 about 2 months ago and ended up rear end into the embankment. I mangled up the rear bumper a bit and blew a tire, and knocked my front end out of alignment and wore 4 nice flat spots on all 4 of my tires. But, I did not roll over, which was amazing because I was rolling along pretty quick. Anyway, the insurance company compensated me for my trouble, so I used the money to get the beefed up rear bumper. I had already planned on lifting the truck (which fixed my alignment trouble), and I also had 4 worn down tires, so I went ahead and replaced them too (which fixed my flat). It worked out pretty well, especially since I was not hurt.
I have a high lift jack, and a 2 ton come-a-long that I don't think is really worth much, and some random tools I have collected through the years. My stereo is not working at this time either, but I may have that fixed by the time the ride rolls around.

From discussion, I beleive that Bob, Gary and I will be staying in a nice cheap motel somewhere in Harrisonburg. Arriving Friday night, and then meeting up at the usual gas station / sandwich shop in the AM. I can't seem to remember the name of the place, but there are others here who would.
Bob, Gary, correct me if I'm wrong on that point.
PS. If I bring my truck (and I doubt it'll be ready by then) it'll be at 5.5" lift, 32s locked rear winch etc etc etc (My Old Specs, mostly current (http://www.tkigd.com/timsjeep.shtml)).

Hey Tim,if you dont bring your rig,you are driving mine right? If we get into heavy stuff i wont be able to do it one handed nor will any friend i might bring.
Tim, you referring to McDorman's store?? David, I'll be running 6," locked rear, 31" swampers(34s coming in the spring 8) ) w/ 4.56s. Still no rock rails but w/ what we ran last time I was there(back when I was stock), I shouldn't have any problems. I hope to make it up there for the run so I can see all you guys again, and meet the rest of you that I haven't met. However it may not work since it's my B-day that weekend, and I gotta make it to Rockville at some point to get my snorkle(parents givin it to me :D ) Peace

money is the issue!?!?!?!?! Considering the budget that im on.. I had a line on an 8.8 for free but it fell thru, and the toy axle would be a good swap strength of a D44 clearence of a D35, disk brakes, and e-locker. Would do a 9" if there was one in xj length but all the ones if seen are full length, which means i'd have to pay someone to cut it down and then have to buy axles... This whole situation is just turning me off completely to this god awful rig im trying to get done....I wish someone local knew and had a welder, and would help a fellow xj'er out. Because i have alot of other ideas i would like done but again it involves welding......

check this places inventory. http://www.waterlooautoparts.com/ they have 8.8s and a d44 in a 87 wagoneer 3.54 ratio for $350 and shipping is probably about 80 bucks. then you'd have to regear, replace bearings and refurbish the brakes, brackets. hopefully someone on the forum has one cheap for you sitting in their shop,if you need a way to haul it home, call me,i can borrow a truck or we can throw it in the back of my xj,i have a rubber mat for the back.
I know this is far away but are we going to nail this down?
Also are you guys running CB's or FRS? if yall want to run FRS can i borrow one from somebody

Scott - I'll be coming over from Richmond, so we can't caravan unless you want to go way out of your way, but it seems to me that all you need to do is get on I-81 south till you get to US 33 West. I believe that people will be meeting at a gas station right there at the exit or at a store a little ways down the road. After that, I'm in the same spot as you and have no idea where we will be headed.
