used car salesman RANT

Well I am going to chime in for what its worth.. IN 99-2000 I was a crew chief on a ford escort rally car, we had a ford box van with the 7.3.. great truck the only thing that sucked was the trans.. 2001 I moved over to a Mitsu team and drove the customers rig that was an 2001 dodge cummins 4x4.. Loved that truck even more than the old box van, so much that I got one of my own.. After 2 years and 150,000 miles later I sold it to a farmer in central cal.. My folks have an 2004 dodge with the cummins and it runs a ton better than my 01 with a bigger turbo.. The only downside to the dodge is the tranny and anything that Banks sells for it.. If you go dodge look into ATS diesel in Colorado they have a trans that works, and other goodies.. Banks crap is all smoke and mirrors crap for the older stuff.. My dodge has been cross country a few times and up to quebec a few times and never left me on the side of the road.. only the trailer has done that.. just my .02$ worth...

Didn't you get stranded in Oregon with one of the Dodges a couple of years ago? A turbo problem wasn't it?

Stranded.. no.. Popped the turbo going up the hill just outside grants pass.. Pulled over, figured out what it was, got off the freeway, turned around and drove it to the dodge dealer.. I rented a box van and continued on to the race with only being down an hour.. While in Portland picked up a new turbo from Outlaw Diesel since the dealer denied the warranty due to the banks crap.. On the way home picked up the truck, paid the diag fee's and changed the turbo in the hotel parking lot in 45 min.. I still love the cummins over the ford or duramax.. Just will never ever put any banks crap on it... My folks 04 is bone stock HO and has just over 100K on it and runs better than my 01 did.. Sorry for the thread jack chris... stick with the dodge... It not like waiting on the side of the freeway in Vermont waiting for a tow truck to tow the ford in for a blown tranny...

stick with the dodge! my partner at work has a 04.5 5.9 cummins 2500 and it runs a 12.82 in the 1/4 mile, on 37s with a 8 inch lift. AND he gets 3 times the gas mileage im getting out of my xj :dunno:

I've got 2 friends with Cummins trucks and they have had great luck with them. One runs WVO in his old 12v one. If I were in the market I'd get a 91-93 old-school Cummins. Or a 6.5 GM since they're incredibly cheap.

I sent you a PM about our 98 12v,

I'd never buy another ford full size again. (sorry Goat)
And I've never been a big Chevy fan.
the 12v cummins is bulletproof save for the KDP which is a cheap kit and some time to install.
The problem with Banks stuff is that some things can be crap but from my experience, the installers there are dumbasses.
when I bought my truck, It was 5k less than comparable chevy's and fords.
The tranny was fine while the truck was stockish but as soon as I figured out the stuff that was misadjusted and release the hounds, it was short order by the time the tranny was dun. So I spent about $2500 buying aftermarket parts and having an off-the-clock heavy line mech build it. Now it holds up just fine. Its got a D70 in the rear and a D60 up front. nothing complicated about that.
The 12v is the only way to fly. 22mpg on the hwy isn't to shabby for a 7k # truck with the bed filled with plants. last week I pulled an 18' travel trailer from encinitas to dana point, camped, came home on friday morning then back friday at noon, hooked up the trailer and pulled it home. on a 1/4 tank.
It will run on Diesel, BioDiesel, WVO, Kerosene 1k and 2k, Jet-A, Jet A-1, JP-5 and JP-B. I can also run on WEO. Yep, thats used and filtered engine oil. non synth of course.
Mine runs on BioD that I make.
My brother gets a new ford every couple of years. Non diesel of course, but each one has allways had some problems. little problems for the most part but enough.
You can't beat a cummins.

Thanks Ryan, appreciate your input!

It is a done deal.....FINALLY, the elusive D2500 CTD 4x4 is at the shop! After securing one in phoenix on Tuesday with a deposit, getting plane tickets, having them call me back and tell me it won't be ready until Friday at 5pm due to numerous problems that were not stated in the ad, change existing plane tickets, get a call thursday night saying a pull test was done on the truck and it failed and was deemed unsafe, cancel tickets, find one in Temecula late Thursday night, 2001 w/180k, for cheap, fleet maintained and in great shape, rent a car and drive out this am and finally, just pulled up!!

I greatly appreciate all you who had input and advice, and helped even though I have never met you in person.....THANK YOU SO MUCH! I promise once I get all my shat together I will throw a huge party here at the shop, let me know if there is ever anything I can do.
