Seat upgrades

The seats and the bases they mount on are what makes them hard to swap. It's generally best to keep the seat bases they came with and modify how they're bolted to the floor.

Since the floor pan changed very little between early and late model XJ's, the most straight forward way to get late model seats into an early XJ is to get the seats, carpet and a particular brace from the floor of a late model donor XJ to swap into the early XJ.

This is the floor of a late model with the front brace that the front seat mounts bolt to:

You can harvest them from the donor XJ by drilling out the spot welds holding them in, then welding them to the floor of your early XJ. The rear feet of the late model seat mounting brackets will not bolt up to the studs in the floor of the early XJ. You'll need to remove the studs, then mark and drill holes for the late model bracket feet and bolt them down.

You'll want the late model carpet as it's molded to go over that floor brace and keeps the install looking nice and working as it should.

And no, there's no difference in the 2dr or 4dr where the carpet and floor braces are concerned. Your donor can be either.

Hope that helps.

Very helpful. Thank you
