I see what you are saying, but to protect that high you would need to stick out pretty far, probably wider than your tires. In the 2nd pic it looks like just the bottom of the door is damaged. I would much rather deal with a damaged door than a damaged rocker panel. But again, most people that I have talked to about rock rails are putting them on to protect from below.

No. They are called boat sides because the raise the rockers up and people put metal (or thick plastic stuff) between the rockers and the frame making the sides look like the side of a boat.
