ford HP44's: what tire size are you running

Mine is 4.88's with a detroit, superior evo's, ctm's, warn premiums, moog ball joints and reid knuckles. I have yet to wheel it, but the previous owner had 36" SX's. I'm installing a doubler and plan on going to at least 37" MTR's. I'm surprised to see so many people running bigger than a 37" tire with such success...

ya but you can't go by what the previous
owner ran for tires, cause he pussyfooted it everywhere. :gee:

just outta curiosity, how much money do you guys have tied up in the 44's?

include the axle itself and the aftermarket for it...thanks

for the above described axle, I spent close to
$3000  but it's about as nice a 44 as any :)

hows breakage? you got 4:1 tcase or is the 4.88 enough?

I've only had it out once so far, I just finished it after almost a year. I do have alloy USA joints. But no problems thus far, everything held up fine. (except the steering box I ripped off)

I bought the axle for 450 bucks with the 4.88's, detroit locker, warn hubs, and custom OTK steering already done. So I threw 4.86's in the 9" and called it good.

I think the 4.88's are fine, plus it will see some street driving as well.

Wow, I didn't realize it cost you that much... I got a good deal on em. (I got this axle with a matching 44 rear with some goodies, steering, and a track bar all for $2700 from Travis)

I've got a full width 78 hp44 with 5.38's and an ARB, with 39/14.50/17 Pitbull bias ply Maddogs. I run stock shafts and spicer joints with Warn hubs. I've been running this setup since October or so. In that time, I've lost one u-joint, and two hubs. I'll blame the u-joint on driver error. I damaged one of the hubs (the dial) rubbing it on the rocks. The other blew internally with the front end wedged in the rocks. Overall I'm happy enough with the performance.

thats like saying my muscle car has too much HP. deep gearing is wicked cool  i would hesisate to run 5.38's with tires as small as 35's

gotchya, just didnt know if the deeper gears would make it more succeptible to breakage?... just seemed like a decently good ratio to run...

big performance difference between 5.13 and 5.38? dont wanna make the r/p too weak :dunno:

ive seen breakage with gear ratios across the board so that doesnt seem to matter, to many other variables. if youre gunna bother re-gearing, just go as deep as the axles can take. very rarely to people complain they have too much gearing, but everyone wishes they had deeper gearing. i cant say much for the performance difference.

Gotcha, right on. Just curious to see some other Ford Radius arm setups, I'm loving mine so far.
I'll see about taking some pix of mine. It works great and has mad flex.

think 5.38's are too deep of gears???
(4.0 stock t-case ...for now)
my rig has em with the 35's and they are AWSUM

on paper, yes it makes em weaker. but XXXX paper. im on my original gearsets with enough other broken parts to make a statue out of them. and the lower the gears in the axles the less stress on the rest of the drivetrain
