2014 Liberkee

Remember that there was also much more competition in the Post 2001 SUV world than before.
Truth. There wasn't much competition and 17 years with barely a makeover? It was due for an update.
Such as? Soft SUVS? Since when was Jeep supposed to be soft?
Says the guy with the supersweet street Jeep...;) As far as Jeep was concerned, they had the Wrangler for wheelers, the WJ for softer wheelers, there was no need for a Cherokee to fill the tiny gap between TJ and WJ. They probably hoped they could move in on the sales seen by the "soft" SUVs.

Update!!

The Wrangler sells like crazy, yes, but if the whole lineup was solid axle wheelers, it wouldn't hold up. That's just the way it goes. Most people aren't looking to spend 20-40k on a new SUV just to go beat it up off-road. The few who do buy JKs or if they want to spend a little extra cash on making it wheelable, an FJ Cruiser or XTerra. The Cherokee became the Liberty for a reason.

Xterra is a porkbeast compared to XJ... if it gets the same fuel mileage as my XJ i would be surprised.
