FYI, just to update this thread, the above advice was wrong.
The last 2 jobs I attempted both required channel locks.
1) Front shock. You need a huge channel lock to hold the shock in place while you turn the top bolt.
2) Radiator hose. I moved the hose off the thermostat housing, so the 2...
Thanks for the replies. I was unable to retap the hole, as the fit was too tight around those radiator hoses, and I just could not get it started. I am not even sure I was using the right size tap, even though the threads did match. Even the tap seemed to go in crooked. I also did not have...
Thanks, it's not the bolt itself. The bolt threads fine in other holes, and other bolts don't work in this hole.
I don't own a tap and die set.
I don't think I am comfortable with possibly permanently ruining the threads if I use it wrong.
Can I drive it to a mechanic with a missing bolt or...
I am in the middle of replacing my VC gasket.
The front bolt right next to the two coolant hoses isn't going back in right.
I thought maybe the valve cover was seated wrong, and causing the bolt to misthread.
So, I removed the cover entirely, and tried to thread the bolt directly to the...
Hmm, at this point, there might be room under the nut to hacksaw it off.
Let me see if I can go borrow one.
I will also have drive out to the hardware store to get replacement bolts then.
Anyone know the sizes?
This top shock bolt is actually getting HARDER to turn as I slowly get it off. It is now fully stuck again. The channel locks are starting to slip off the shock sleeve, and I am starting to mangle the sleeve itself, since I need to regrip the locks after every 1/8 turn I can manage.
It...
I have no idea how you can get vice grips onto the top of that stud. I tried the Vice grip trick, and there's no way you can get it on tight enough to not slip. You must recall I have a truly special POS '98 XJ that has rust on every single bolt that requires a mechanic for even the simplest...
I borrowed a massive 18 inch channel lock from a professional plumber. I was able to get the nut loose.
It's going to take me an hour to remove that bolt, 1/8 turn at a time!
Do people usually remove the air box to get at that top bolt more easily?
I am doing this with the car not...
After a winter of solid service by my XJ, I decided to finally attempt the front shocks job now that the weather is nice again. Since internet forum braggarts estimate for this job clock in at 20 mins, I got up at 5:30am, and set aside 14 full hours to do this job, and I have all of tomorrow...
Any codes?
Search around.

I was not aware there are quiet ones, but do not think $550 is worth it for my minimal use. I need a quiet compressor that will not disturb the neighbors. I assumed this did not exist.
Is there a different entry level compressor that isn't a total dog that could be used for small...
The PO of my XJ somehow was able to yank the entire cable out through the grille. It would just hang there, and he used vice grips to pull on the inner cable when he needed to pop the hood. The fact that he never bothered to replace this $30 part, and instead left it like this was the red flag...
That's a huge gap. Are you sure the part you installed is even the correct part? How can someone sell that exhaust manifold and claim it fits your XJ when it comes up almost a foot short? This is why many people pay extra for OEM parts. Nothing worse than an aftermarket part that doesn't fit.
