With that old 22r motor it will be a 6 hour job up to a weekend if first time, you dont need to mill/rebuild the head unless its warped. It doesnt get any easier than doing a head on a I4 RWD vehicle.

You need to address the moisture issue, if your carpet got wet youll need to pull it.
I love the 242, I rarely used the part time 4wd. Whether its actually better depends on what you are doing with it, generally the 231 is better when it comes to off-road modified vehicles. You can run in part time at any speed especially if its in a straight line.
Nissan used a divorced t-case on the 80's pickup trucks, ford used a divorced case on the 70's highboys too. I think that the ford cases were 205's but dont quote me on it.

Id do several drain and fills and leave the filter alone. Itll be about as good as a flush and remove most of the old fluid (by dillution). Drain/fill then drive it awhile. You wont get much fluid out just by doing the drain and fill once. My understanding is that the filters dont get clogged or...
