What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

I spent some time on Artec site looking at trusses. I have a front D44 from a (I think) late 70's Ford that I want to put under my XJ. Tubes are 2 3/4" dia and 1/2" thick. I do not think I need a full truss for 32" tires but I need a one stop idiot proof complete set of brackets for it.
Artec's stuff look good and have great reviews but come with a hefty price.

I used their truss on my 14 and their shock towers on my struts . I would have used them on my front 60 but it already had a brake bent link bridge welded into the diff housing and couple other things that would have required cutting an artec up to fit , so I just made what I needed from 6x3 .250 rec tube capped with 3/8ths cold rolled and addes sone internal gussets ... cost $25 , but took me my weekend to fit up and finish ...lol...if my axle was stripped down it would be a no brainer to buy an artec and just add some extra to it as it would speed up my time to being on trail again...lol... like before my new treps dry rot from age .

I'm considering ordering 4 large EMF rod ends for my rear uppers to match the lowers I had left the 2.5 jj on the uppers figuring the uppers don't need as large a thru bolt as lowers ... am I wrong here ? The uppers have the 9/16th thru bolt 1.25x 12 tpi shank and I'm considering the 1.25x12 x3/4 like the ballisticfab lowers . Front is all 3/4 with EMF and ballistic rod ends.

Got a few things going on. TJ is in hover mode. Box should be here tomorrow with link tabs to finish swapping the 8.25 in. Be triangulated, trussed, geared and locked. So should be a lot more capable on the little jeepy. Still need sye setup. But still focusing on the Tacoma.
Speaking of that skank.
Got the font bumper built and winch on. Just waiting for my front diff to show up so I can swap both in. 5.29’s and a rear locker. And if I find the right deal or certain tires come off back order, be stepping it up to 35/37’s.

I don’t know why it did my edit as a quote ?

Only paid members can edit.

BTW, some RED LETTER MEMBER from the COLORADO CHAPTER who signs up or renews during the March Membership Drive will win this:

Didn’t realize that was a thing. That’s dumb. More work for mods. After getting yelled at for paying ahead another persons membership, and the lack of, well, anything from the chapter for years, there’s really no interest in paying up. No swag, no event last year, struggling for an event again this year, etc. Not being nasty, just sayin.

Noted, and appreciated. Its your chapter too, just sayin.

You warped the truss top or the 60 housing twice ?

Yep, the area where there is the least bracing. I would weld one vertical or horizontal section at a time, let it cool completely, and then do the next weld. This is a picture of the truss upside down.

The weld you see on the inside there, I did to both sides, letting it cool in between. That weld was enough to warp it to where I had to go back to the press

Why are you considering changing the track bar and link mounts? and I followed your advice on the coilover mounts. Needs some braces but looks way better already.

The panhard where it was wasn't going to play nice with the truss, especially with the wheelbase bump. Hoping to get a straight panhard in there this time, no bends.

I agree, but there are ways to save.

Summit sells Artec stuff, and you can find it on eBay.

eBay does 15-20% off sales here and there (just had one last week).

Buy it from Summit, get free shipping AND 15-20% off...helps a bit.

Didn't fully get where I wanted to by the end of this weekend, but made progress.

Truss bracing welded front and back, and the truss in place.

Currently working on getting some strut brackets figured out. I've got them drawn up in Inventor, ready to send to Bryson who has graciously said he'd CNC them out for me. Once the ORI mounts are all set, I'll get the C's on and burned in. From there, just need to get the panhard mounts done. Going to be a bit simpler this time around...

Yeah, I am not sure the long drawn out convo belongs in this thread. However, ‘my chapter’ ended when the efforts were put forth to get things done, vendors lined up, prices established and everythingnto support chapter, to be blown off. Much like cofest, nothing gets done unless people are babysat and forced to do things a certain way.

Edit to add:
Feel free to pm me if you need details or examples of what I’m talking about. It’s not a new problem, it’s been time coming/growing.

Dayum clean welds sir. Can I presume that Hobart I saw a few pics ago made these?

Thanks, not too bad of welds...would have been easier if I had someone to hold the torch so I didn't have to rush.

If I ever have to do this again, I'm buying an oven off CL and using that to preheat and post heat the housing.

And yep, Hobart 180 welder. Had it a while now, it gets the job done. Wouldn't mind stepping up to a 210 or something of the sort one day.
