"Our Decisions Are Only As Good As The Information We Have To Work With!"

Seems like there is always a way to add a couple gauges to our modded rigs, and often a need. I thought it would be interesting to post a thread with a poll on which ones you added, or would like to add.

Pick yours and please tell what factors helped you decide if applicable, and indicate the uses of your XJ as well, and pics of the install if you have them.

If your choice is not listed, choose "other" and reply with which ones you chose and why.

Interested to see what is most popular and why! :variety:

Trans Temp - Oil Temp Because

OK it's only fair that I answer too right?

I think I will add trans and oil temp, because even though the stock gauges are not terribly accurate, I know where they always runand can still see a probelm situation developing when they veer out of range.

Trans and oil temp should help me see how hard I am working my XJ and if I have a friction problem developing - with all the low speed work we do in these vehicles, I think they might be prone to a failure sneaking up on me!

Trans temp and ScanGauge, although I now mostly use the app "Torque" on an old Droid phone. Oil temp would be the only other gauge I would think would be practical, for my use anyway.

trans temp for sure. always good to keep an eye on it, the AW4 likes to stay under 200°. heat and running low on fluid are just about the only two things that can kill an aw4

I have OBDII so I'd add a trans temp gauge and an Scan gauge 2, it reads a lot of computer parameters.

I've added to two XJ's, so I've got three gauges--
1.) trans temp in the automatic along with a reliable volt meter run to a better circuit (with far fewer power robbing accesories)
2.) mechanical oil pressure gauge and reliable volt meter in the stick shift XJ

...along with a reliable volt meter run to a better circuit (with far fewer power robbing accesories)

Hey I have noticed that my voltmeter shows way low sometimes and I'm sure my system is not dropping that low - is that what you are referring to? Running AC on a hot day plus stereo it indicates like 10 v!

Do we need to pick two?

I would be fine with just the tranny gauge. I would be get a scan gauge if I got a second one.

what is scan gage?

http://www.scangauge.com/

OBDII widget, lets you see the sensor data, trip computer functions, read/clear codes, and quite a few other things depending on which version you have. There are a few comparable devices/apps doing the same thing; I think the SG just happened to hit the market sooner.

The only pic I have of mine in use. Intake air temp, water temp, fuel used, distance to empty.

Like many others, transmission temp and a ScanGauge.
I have have one ScanGauge and move it from the XJ to the motor home, as needed.

I voted for a Trans temp and oil temp.

As far as the stock voltmeter goes, I wish they also had the idiot light to tell you when your alt. stops working (atleast in my Renix it would help).

Also, can the Scangage work on Renix or OBD1?

I added trans temp, oil temp, oil pressure and manifold vacuum gauges. The tranny gauge was nice and will come in handy in the future when towing or at other such loads. The aftermarket keeps it plenty cool so anything else. Oil pressure gauge just verified that the stock gauge wasn't all that accurate, dwelling a while around 40 PSI with the real gauge is between 32-42 psi. Vacuum is nice to see the load on the engine. The most relevant gauge is the oil temp. It was an eye opener to see how long the oil temp took to come up. 5 minutes from my house and the coolant is up to temp. Oil temp is like 15 minutes behind it. Oil temp needs to be above water boil off temp to boil off water from the combustion process. Mine needs extend drive to see this happen. Also, it was advised by Joe Gibbs that I let the oil temp get to at least 180* prior to getting on it.

I also don't trust the scan gauge and the like because it is just telling you what the computer sees and as we know it can be flawed.
