recovery winch

you have alot to learn in life, grasshopper.
Hey, I'm cheap and poor. ;) I try to buy American, but if the cost is significantly more (without a corresponding increase in quality) or quality is lacking, I have no problem buying foreign made stuff. And even you should be able to admit that the test results showed the TMax beating the Warn, with either Engo or Superwinch coming in a close second. Warn should've been 4th except for the ridiculous subjective scoring. I mean seriously? How is the remote worth as much as ALL of the performance tests?

My Smittybuilt is working fine for what it cost. I knew the day I bought it I wasn't buying a Warn winch. Any winch you buy can leave you stranded if you are by yourself. That is why you always wheel with others.

How come no one is talking about Ramsey??? Come on guys!!!

I love my USA built warn!

I had a XD9000i, I used the hell out of it. Then sold it to buy the warn above. My buddy who bought it just about ripped his hand off the first time he used it, do to the line speed!

In my eyes, warn is the way to go.
Some of my friends have smittybuilts (10k) they work but they are slow and those guys are not the first one to offer a line ( do to insecurities?) it seems that when someone is stuck a warn guy is the first to say "I'll get my jeep".

I have seen in person, a smittybuilt on it's first and last use. My buddy was in a ditch in the snow and he was not even out by the time the smitty killed it's self.
I don't mean just quit working, it ripped it's self apart.

He was pulled out with my warn, I wish I still had pic it was crazy!

Warn for the win!

This rig wheels triple black diamond trails
Not the mall with all the JK's

Triple black diamond?! You've won me over! Like I said, my Smittybilt has been worked hard and never complained. It is slow, but if I was worried about blazing line speed, I would've spent more and bought something faster. At the time, probably either a Warn or Superwinch

$1300 for a winch, no thanks. I've bought jeeps for less. And I've run triple blackdiamond trails with no winch. I've winch a jeep out of a mud hole with a high lift jack.

Who said I paid $1300? I'll bet im in to my jeep less then you are (and I have some pretty cool shit!)
Winching with a high lift, that sounds like a fun way to spend 90mins... 40inchs at A time.

I thought we are talking about winches? Not high lifts!

That winch is obnoxious

Yep, it fits me nicely.

Recently purchased a Warn M8000 winch, for my ARB 'roo bumper. Not yet wired. However, I only paid around $560. from streetsideauto.com, in Kansas City, (can't recall which K.C.), but it was shipped free to the Tacoma area of Wa. St., and then barged to Ak. I have noticed that this model is now around a grand, but if'in you google around you might still find one with that price break.

There was an older MOABJEEPER Magazine article about a winch test between seven different makers during some spooky looking places in the Hells Revenge trail in Moab Utah. Google for it.., as my dial-up won't get me there today in order )to give 'ya all the easy link.

Another note about ARBUSA: I was told that only the M8000 was used as a template for the Bull Bar Bumper for years circa my '89. However, in order to 'crank' properly, I had to cut a hole top-side of the bumper plate in order to reach the handle from the topside, rather than reaching around under the bumper. Bitch in deep mud, or in-deep during a blizzard.

Op posted about a cheap winch, warn doesn't make one. Current pricing on a warn powerplant is $1300. I bought my smitybuilt xrc 8000 for $249. Point about the highlift is I would rather do that than drop over a grand on a winch. Fwiw, I'm less than $5k into my jeep, including purchase price. It's locked front and rear, geared 4.88, re 7" lift, sye, 35" pitbull maddogs.

m8000 can still be had for <600 and the Vr8000 can be had for $400

What i love about the arguement of "the warn couldnt handle 16k"
Who subjects a winch to that weight? the only way to hold your jeep in place with that kind of pulling is to secure it to something, strap to a tree etc.. You're likely going to KILL your frame plates where the bumper mounts at 16k pounds before cooking the winch!

The main factor when shopping for a winch is LINE SPEED
just LOOK at the specs.. the XRC10 can pull 10k.. AT 1.8FT/MIN My m8000 is not even RATED for 10k and i can assure you it will STILL pull double that speed at 10k.. if not tripple!

when your trying to winch 25ft out of a situation.. the difference between 5 mins and 25mins is a DEAD battery.. any winch will kill ANY battery with constant duty.. i know i want MY winch to hurry up and get the job done.. so my battery can start "healing" :scared:

I find it ironic tho, because the WARN failed at 16k but the "engo" survived.. All Warns are junk and ANYTHING is better..
Because a $900 warn failed, that MUST mean that a $400 Smittybilt will survive even tho it wasn't in the "test"

I didnt buy my winch, to subject it to double its rated capacity.. I bought it to pull my jeep out safely, securely, and FAST.

Warns Starting wage $10.50/hr (as of last year iirc)
What's smittybilts? $0.65/hr?

ask yourself THAT.. next time your trying to figure out the price difference..

Xrc8 is rated at 8.2ft/min at 8000lbs. Vr8000 is rated at 4.2ft/min at 8000. Almost double the line speed, $150 cheaper. Pay for the brand name if you want, I'll stick with the cheaper and faster smitybuilt. I'm glad to see that in the cheap winch thread, you finally mentioned a cheap winch, but it's performance sucks.

\Pay for the brand name if you want, I'll stick with the cheaper .

remember that.. when someone close to you looses their job of 10 years because of an inferior overseas product that sells for half the price due to 1/32nd the cost to build it..

and GOODLUCK on that "warranty"

like I said before mine gets to be Warn and Cheap in the same sentence!

my dad bought us a nice ramsey when I was like 16 (yeesh 15 yrs ago)..
and after a few years it failed since then he's on his second of "its whatever I found cheapest" which both lasted longer than his kinda pricey ramsey..
he swears by just buying a cheapo

but I feel like I have the last winch I'll ever buy warn was crazy helpful and still gave me great service when calling about an old old product. It was pretty easy to rebuild and worked perfect even though it was rough looking and old as heck when I got it.

And parts are readily available due to the release of the kinda pricey new version. If you ever need to replace the motor you end up with the newer more powerful motor for it and the extra gear reduction of the older models (or so I was told). And it's got a fast line speed

All these life and death situations people refer to, please describe 1? Did you hook your winch up and drive off a cliff to see if it would hold? Drive your jeep in to water so deep your drowning (with a scuba diver to winch you out)? I've wheeled for years without a winch and haven't died. I bought a smittybuilt 8000, but it's receiver mounted and usually in the back of my jeep. If you put yourself in a position that a winch failure will kill you, you are using it wrong. If you take nothing else from the test results, it's that recovery gear fails at times no matter the price. If you use your winch every trip, I'd buy a warn. I've used mine once. I find it's faster to throw a strap.

It's not a matter of life or death, more a matter of driving home or walking.

Not sure if someone has mentioned this brand yet but Champion is not bad and they are fairly inexpensive. Tractor Supply sells them and I am sure there are other places that you can pick one up from. I saw an article that tested a whole bunch of different winches and there were only three wiches to make it through without failing in some way shape or form and it came in third behind superwinch and warn. They said it just barely made it and it should have died but it just kept going. Anyways it wouldn't survive heavy use but light occasional use it would be perfect for.
