lockers/ice whats the big deal??

LOL do you have any Idea how badly our JY's round here suck. A 8.8 in any kind of functioning condition is a $600 axle. I once got quoted $900 for a toyota axle with where the brakes were crushed on one side

actually I have an older narrow track F-100 9" already stripped down and cleaned if I'd quit cheapin out and buy some internals. I even have all the perches and tabs new sitting on my workbench
Good lord. That's insane.

I picked up an 8.8 in great shape, except for the brakes, for $105 including tax here. Oh, it cost me a pack of sawzall blades and a little blood/sweat too... make it $115. Dropped about $10 in cutting wheels, about $130 in brake hardware (needed new rotors/pads.)

Find out where there is a good pick-n-pull as close as possible and make it a roadtrip  for instance the long island guys get reamed at the JY too, but I'm only a 3 hour drive away and get stuff for like 15% the cost they do.

There is a few Pull-a-Parts down there(Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile), Rear axles w/dick brakes $111.09 w/a $25.38 core charge.... So $140+/-?

Its amazing how many people say that their Junkyards are expensive only to find a pull a part near them if you search.

There's no such thing in these parts.
the nearest "pull a part" is in Memphis Tennessee just a quick 300 mile trip!:roflmao:

In fact I don't understand the mentality of our boneyards at all. It's almost as though they'd rather NOT make a sale to you on parts and then in a couple three years crush a vehicle with lots of stuff they could have made some $$ on. Granted not at the anal rape prices they would like to get but money just the same.

And of course wheelin is BIG round here thus all the scrappers know what parts are and are not in demand. A quick rule of thumb is if it CAN be used on a jeep the price doubles.

I put a rear Aussie in a week ago and spent the last two days out in 7"-10" of snow and ice. From everything I'd read, I too thought a locker on ice instantly made your rig flip over and explode. I found the opposite to be true. The additional traction of the locker and the predictable handling of both wheels turning at the same speed made for a very controllable ride.

Wow, those pull-a-parts look nice lol. My local JY lets you go into the yard and pull your own crap, and will help you if you need something big done. The only problem is pretty much everything is sitting on the axles, or just the body/frame if the axles have been removed. Makes it really hard to grab a set of spindles/brakes or driveshaft.

Go to harbor freight and drop 70 bucks on a 3 ton hydraulic floor jack. My local pull-a-part charges 20 dollars to put a vehicle up on a disassembly stand, I've saved at least 100 dollars jacking vehicles up myself and stacking large rocks/brake drums/brake rotors under them so far and the jack is still working great. Took me 2 minutes to jack up the front end of an XJ last weekend to pull axleshafts and unit bearings, jammed a large (~12" wide, 8" tall) rock under each end of the axle tubes and dropped it back down then went to work on it.

Where are you located in Arkansas, there is Pick-n-Pull formerly U-Pull-It, in Little Rock. There is another one in Cowbutt. I have only been to the Little Rock one, and they seem to have good prices, but I have never bought an axle from them.

I don't think they'll let you bring a jack in. From what a buddy told me, you just have to tell em you want to lift something and they'll bring a giant fork-lift over to pick it up for you. I haven't tried it yet.

Those around North Miami Dade do not allow you to bring jacks of any kind into the yard. They do not allow torches either. All the vehicles are on stands made from two wheel rims welded at 90* of each other. Most of the yards are concreted for your comfort. If you need more lift or need to lift an engine they will lend you an 'A' frame and chain hoist or bring a giant fork lift and lift it for you. Prices at the U-Pull yards here are very low.
