I just realized that I haven't been sharing my latest project over here, and was only actually posting it over on PNWJ.

So rather than continuing to build and take brand new JK's to Moab and TSF and junk, I've decided it would be better suited to take something with a few more years on it.

So here's what we're building...

1992 Wrangler 4.0L HO, Auto Trans, 105K miles on the odometer, here are the before pics

With everything out I found 5 spots in the floor that were cracking. One appeared to be a spot in the back where something was dropped and actually punctured the floor.

The others were all under the front seats from stress.

A little welding and griding and we've got it all ready to go.

Cool looking good

How well did it tow? I know your wj has alot more power then my xj but how did it handle? I was thinking of towing my yj like that to and from the trail till I can build a smaller car hauler.

I literally dragged it about 1 mile no faster than 30mph. The LineX shop is right down the street.

I wouldn't use my WJ as a tow rig for much, the brakes suck.

I will when there are some. I'm trying to put a dent in the cage build before I take off for a few weeks starting next week, but not much is getting done so far.

Other than that, my 37" BFG KM2's showed up...

Very nice cage work. I notice that all of the mounting points are bolt in. Are you considerring productizing your work?

I suspect the design is more than adequate for a flop and could handle multiple hits very well.

Some thoughts for possible changes:
1. Seats can flex very considerabley in accidents. Review some slow motion crash test videos and it is not uncommon to see a huge range of motion. Often racing bodies sanction requirements for tying seats into cages.

2. Consider the internet quote: "Rule: An unsupported bend in a rollcage is a spring and a prefailure." Here are two examples that were cited as good design to address the rule.

Also two ideas for features that I like:
1. Designated handholds inside the cage.
2. Tightly triagulated bends that provide captive line attachment points.

Again very nice work. I like your design a lot and think you are building a very good safety device.

Cheers,
Matt
