Expected milage from 2WD XJ

My son needs a ride. He likes my XJ but hates the big sucking sound he hears when he steps on the gas. What kind of mileage do our 2WD cousins get?

I did the math many times ,.. From San Antonio Texas with a full tank of hi-grade gas to Houston Texas, re-topped off the tank and did the math.

I take this trip about 2 times per months. At night the air temperature is less than it is in the day so the engines runs about 190 degrees (not 210 as in the daytime) It's cooler So I do not need the A/C maybe the back windows down 1/2 the way and the fan on, Also I got a K&N air filters. There is no stop and go or any traffic. So I'm not re-accelerating back up to speed. I use the cruise control all the time set to 65 my sweet mpg spot. Sometimes :nono: I'll drive behind a big rig staying about one truck trailer length behind him.

4wd or 2wd the only thing difference is the two (right & left) half shafts spinning inside the axle tube. I do not think that would make much of a differnce in mpg.

WOW, The most I got on a trip is 18MPG on my 2000 4x4, but that was a steady 80MPH.

Try driving slower so the rpm are not so high, Remember higher the rpm's the more gas your going to :flame:

Driving fast (70+) or slow (60~70 speed limit) on long trips dose not save any time. I'v been using GPS for over 12 years. The older GPS units gave better estimated time of arrival. Based on speed and distance to go. The new one work on speed limits pre-installed in the GPS units map. Anyway a 4 hour drive going 10mph over speed limit of 70mph I'll only save about 20 minutes. And if I get pulled over by Mr Cop. You can easily lose 30 minutes doing the paper work and all the song and dance. So No real time saved.

Two half shafts, front driveshaft, some transfer case parts no doubt -- my guess is a couple of miles per gallon.

And you are going 65MPH drafting trucks! LOL Sorry, I tried driving slower in the 70's with the 55MPH national speed limit. In Michigan, driving 65 is dangerous. People will cut in in front of you and give you the finger. (At least thats what I do. LOL)

I hope not. The brakes are puting down about 15psi from the brak buster got to be more then the free spinning 4wd parts give

Yes I do

Being about one truck trailer length behind the big truck the other cars go around both of use at the same time with out any attitude

Don't forget the different axle ratios with a manual trans. I have a '96 4 cyl. 5 speed and it has 4.11 factory gears. At 70 MPH it's turning 3000 RPM, not necessarily bad with a 5750 red line, but it is a bit buzzy. The 6 cyl. cars have 3.07 gears with manual so the engine is turning slow which doesn't always give better mileage, because mileage is based partly on throttle position, not just RPM's.
Personally a revving 4 cyl. that's in it's "sweet spot" at 65 is more fun than a 6 cyl. that's lugging along and needs to be shifted down a couple of gears for power.

My stock 98 2wd Limited with the AW4 gets 17 in town and 21 on the freeway regardless of the distance. I calculate it after each fill-up and the on-board mileage computer is VERY accurate for my rig. My gear ration is 3.55 with the ChryCo 8.25. I just had the rear differential completely re-built and saw about a 1/2 a mile per gallon increase with new bearings.

Hey Joe, that calculator is cool, but something doesn't seem right. A 2000 with 4.0, automatic, and 2WD will average 17.4 and the same set-up with 4WD gets 19.4.

Wait until we see the X-rays from medicalcare.gov LOL

You forgot the 2 mpg boost you get from the 4wd "Cool" factor! LOL!

With my 4x4, auto, original 4.0, and 31" tires on stock gearing I once got 21mpg on a 100% highway trip, going about 80, with my front DS removed, and my best with the shaft hooked up has not come near that. A 2wd Jeep would have even less rolling resistance than mine in that configuration. Suprisingly I get the best mileage around 80 mph, as that puts me near the torque peak in 4th gear. Torque peaks vary throughout the years, and there's been threads on here about driving in 3rd to improve mpg, but I assume the big mpg saver is not driving with a lead foot.

i get 18-22 on my 16-mile commute and close to 25 on longer trips. i have a 89 cherokee 2wd/5spd/3.07 and 2002 GC 4.0 running all the renix injection and accessories. this is with a 3" lift and 225-75-16 tires. 65 mph puts the engine about 1800 rpm.

I normally got 19-19.xx(just a little under 20) with 70% of miles at 55 country roads and 30% city. I've gotten over 20mpg a few times though.

with a 96 XJ 4wd

being 2wd, you should be on par fuel mileage wise with the car based crap they try to pass off as a credible SUV these days.

With my XJ, I'm avg. 20-22mpg.

4.0, AX-15, 3.07 open rear with stock sized tires.

I've got 209K on the clock and my numbers are up a bit with my Cruise control I installed at the start of the month.

Plus it's been a bit humid and hot here in the ATL area so yep the a/c has been on.

My commute to/from work is 35 miles. I avg. 300 miles before the yellow light comes on.

In fifth gear with the 4.0 turning 2000 rpm, I'm going around 60-65 (iirc).

ETA: Woo Hoo I got page 2...

ok i'm confused, my 4.0, ax-15 with 3.07 gears in 5th at 2k is going exactly 75mph. i plan on getting some axles with 3.55's or 3.73's to get to the rpm range that you say you're at with 3.07's. something isn't adding up!

i recently just had stub shafts only in my 4wd xj, ans still only managed to get 18mpg, thats with stock tires and 3" lift

that might be the belt driven fan... electric fan swaps aren't too hard. They make wiring/controller kits for them, makes it easy. Otherwise it's the air intake. I can't help you here, but what the heck does he think he's driving? A Buick? lol.
