What Axles came stock on a 1985 Jeep Wagoneer??

I've got a 97 xj with stock axles, dana 30 front, Chrysler 8.25 rear.. thats the new model of the 8 1/4 with the 29 spline axle shafts, not the 27 spline. I'm running some 33x12.50 procomp Mt's with 4.5 in lift and a pair of bushwhacker cutout flairs.

Now heres the prob.. a friend has an 1985 jeep Wagoner.. not the grand Wagoner, its one of the granddaddy xj's that still carried the Wagoner name. its a old beater with a GM v6 in it. But, so he says it has front and rear dana 44's. I wonder if this is correct. I know older xj's with toeing packages and Comanche’s had dana 44's in the rear, but i've never heard of one that both. Anyone ever heard of this?

Also, anyone have any comments on how much better dana 44's are than my current setup? bigger breaks? stronger shafts? etc

He's asking $800 for the whole setup.. the jeep's got a 4.5 in lift, 32x11.50's, and comes with an extra set of black steel wheels and a cb. Its not running right now due to some wiring probs.
~if true the plan is to remove and rebuild the axles, installing them on my 97xj
~and I have a friend who will buy my dana 30 for a few bucks if this all works out

Just hate using any jeep for scrap!

Thanks for all the help

John

i was on the hunt this morning for the ever elusive 44 for mine. i saw an 89 waggy and it had a 35c in it, but i can't say for the rest of them. i'm pretty sure none of the regular wagoneers had 44's front and back unless someone swapped them out. the grands had 44's though.

An 85 xj came stock with a Dana 30 front axle and a Dana 35 non-C clir rear axle. Tow package option put a Dana 44 in the rear but was only offered with an auto trans.

Thats what i was thinking.. the jeep is an auto, so maybe it has a toe package.. Hopefully someone has switched out the front axle.. Doubtful, but maybe i'm in luck. I just don’t feel like buying an entire jeep for the rear axle. even for $800 and a bunch of goodies.. eeh

not that bad of a deal.. considering it bolts right on, the extras, and i can sell the front axle to a friend for some money.. just dont have any room for an extra jeep..

Anyone know about scrap yard policies and what they'll buy, or just take off your hands?

if there are actually a pair of 44's, that set of new 35's i've had for a year is def going on!

Lots of bad info in this thread already so I will add some correct info to it. I own an 85 wagoneer and have done alot of searching on my heep. It only came with a d30 up front and a d35 non c-clip in the rear. The d44 was not offered until 87 and up in either the cherokee or wagoneer. The 85 cherokee's and waggy's came with either a 2.5 inline four or 2.8 chev. V6. If this wagoneer that you are looking at has full size d44's front and rear than they were put in by somebody. With the lift and tires on it it isn't a bad deal for $800.00 but with a motor that don't run I would ask for less.

Read the original post please. We are talking about an 85 XJ Wagoneer with a V-6 not a full size Cherokee or Wagoneer with a V-8.

This jeep came from the factory with d30/d35. The owner would have had to swap out these axles to have d44's front and rear.

In 1985, the Wagoneer was an XJ. Your information relates to the GRAND Wagoneer.

the 44 definately has bigger axle shafts than a 27 spline 8.25...it probably has bigger shafts than a 29 spline, but i can't say for sure. i do know that it is not a c clip axle, and it has a little bit stronger housing than the 8.25. it also uses a bigger ring gear. your 8.25 should do you fine for a while though...however, gears are easier to find and usually a little cheaper for the 44 rear.

I have an '85 XJ Wagoneer also, Dana 30 front - Dana 35 NON C-clip rear most likely with 3.73s. Mine is the Limited with 2.5 4cyl. 904 auto tranny and a factory hitch, all the bells and whistles - but still the Dana 35 rear. I swear the old Dana 35s are stronger than the newer ones.
