Trans Difficult Shifting into gear(AW4)

91 Jeep Cherokee, Automatic(AW4) trans.

The trans is very difficult to shift into gear(not physically hard, but very finicky), there are no defined clicks or anything to get it into gear, and really favors reverse and neutral. You just kind of pull back and once the engine revs a little, you know it's in reverse. Doesn't like to go back into park, and you have to pull the gear shift back extremely quickly to get it to go into drive, and it generally take a few tries to get it to do that.

At the current moment, it's refusing to go into park.

Once it's in drive, it drives and shifts fine, without issue. No strange noises, the trans fluid is fine, no excessive heat.

I'm leaning toward it being a cable issue, like it may be kinked up or something, but could it be something inside the transmission causing this? Any ideas/previous experiences?

Thanks!
