The engine can wiggle around a lot. Loosen the cross member to frame bolts, and pry the engine/trans over a bit. Tighten up the bolts as you are prying.

... and although they're new, loosen the motor mount bolts/nuts (into the frame) and let it move as well-- IIRC, there's a small bit of slack in the holes that might make things easier.
caught the mechanic at work in a good mood so we put it up on the lift, cut the carpet and undid the screws for the bracket, hooked it up and re-screwed it back, got 4H working, adjustment rod was too far gone to mess with it for 4L so that'll have to wait, don't think there is much wheeling for a stock xj with horizontal leafs anyways
