Road Trip this week.... NC to Texas; sights?

Hey ya'll. Heading out to East Texas this week. I have to be there by Sat. evening for my oldest sons HS graduation. We are leaving Wed around noon. I will give you an idea of our route; if you know of any "must see" sights close by I would love to hear about it.

Leave Wed, Head down I-85 though Greensboro, Charlotte to probably Atlanta for the night. Thursday the plan is to head West on I-20 through Birmingham, Tuscolusa, Meridian. May stop for the night in Mississippi. Maybe Jackson area... all depends on time. Then roll in to Longview/Marshall area Friday. Stay there a couple days.

Depending on time, we may return via Baton Rouge, Gulfport/Biloxi (have not been there since doing Hurricane Relief last October). Then up to Mobile, Montgomery, then home.

We will not be in a huge hurry, as both dogs are coming with us.

Sooooo. :) Lets have it... ideas?

Thanks.

Vicksburg Military Park. Maybe swing down to Natchez.

What are you in to?

Glen

Got a state and nearby city on those?

I am in to seeing whatever is interesting that is not too far out of the way. No butterfly farms, etc... mostly the "must see while in the area" type stuff.

If you come through Knoxville I can show you a full moon. Its freakishly white;)

Thanks, but not sure we are going that far East.

Nope..but he will be within about an hour and 1/2 of me from the time he hits Atlanta till they leave B'ham

You know, my wife is'nt even that nice lol. No really thanks

As for your trip I have ony played in the back yard lots to do. I have been to Colo. Avalanche Ranch (awsome).

I am just getting the ride up to par to dide with the big dogs.
If you are ever around New Mexico give a shout!!!

Bo

well as stated on othere thread im not sure as to what this is all about ....if your going threw MS i havent been down home in a long time ..and why did i get picked on the other thread for this one ? i was raised in MS but we wheeled in lots of places as far as any actuall parks i have no clue

HAH! Good one Glenn. Anywho, as an upstanding :NAXJA: member, here is my input.
ATL: Go to the new aquarium. It has nearly surpassed the 06' opening projection of like 4 million people or something like that. It is suposed to be AWSOME (haven't been yet). There is also Six Flags. It has a new ride that is from what I hear is amazing. The coca cola plant. Off 400 (not far off i85), on the east side of ATL, there are a few outlet malls for some great savings (used to work there).

You can always make a detour to UGA. WOOF!

How into racing are you?

Charlotte has the speedway with a few museums if your into that kida thing.

Around Birmingham is Talledega Speedway... more racing

Tuscalusa is the University of Alabama (in my best forest gump voice)

Gulf port all I really know of are the beaches and well..... ports.

Luisianna, there is still the french QT (not too damaged from what I hear)

Biloxi is fun. CASINOS! Gamble your heart out, or catch a show.

If you make it to Houston there is the space center. I spent all day there and bought a nifty pressurized pen (see writes under water).

That is all I can think of at the moment.HTH.

About the only place I know of in that area will be Barnwell Mountain near Gilmer. Gilmer is just northwest of Longview. It's a pretty nice offroad area. I'm otherwise not familiar with that part of the state. If you do go to Gilmer, don't eat at the Golden Corral. Very nasty. Too bad you aren't coming through west Texas. We could burn some steaks and tip a few beers.

For all you other yahoos, my wife and I was visiting San Francisco a few years back and Glenn was kind enough to give me some points of interest in that beautiful city. We visited the firehouse where his dad works. It was very interesting and we were given the royal tour.

If you get nearby there, Ft Benning in Columbus GA is pretty cool. The Airborne Walk and ya might get to see dem foos getting dropped off a 250 foot tower.

From Atlanta, 85 south... at Macon take 185 south... that leads right into the base...

I spent my time there in a drunken blur, but they *might* have a cool museum... Not nearly as cool as the Patton Museum at Ft Knox KY (SE of Louisville)

Also there is Fort Rucker near Dothan AL (it is further southwest from Ft Benning) there they train the chopper jockeys. And Pensacola NAS on th FL panhandle where they train the Navy flyboys & girls. Destin is a beautiful resort town nearby, if white sand and blue-green water is your thing.

Other than that, I am not really hip to the trip in the far south.

HTH, have fun & be safe. you have my #s if you need anything.

the only place i could think of would be Taledega super speedway, and as far as Jackson Mississippi goes i was there last November, i found it to be a really boring place, and from what i hear the crime rate is really high

I usually don't stop between places. However, I have been to Ana Ruby Falls, near Helen, GA. Interesting place, both Town and Park.
The GA mountains look like they have potential for fun, especially when you are tired and they Fog in (don't ask how I know). The Arch in St Louis, "The Gateway to the West" is an interesting thing.
When I drove though Chattenooga, TN, it looked interesting. Likely lots of Civil War items there to examine.

If you're traveling solo I know some good cat houses :D

Thanks, good ideas if I get up that way. May save some of them for my Midwest trip later this year.

By the way, you mentioned mountains. I have seen hills and stuff, but there are no real mountains out here. The East Coasters will argue that, but anybody from the West knows what Mountains are. :)

Nope, girfriend, our two Labs, and myself.

Interesting timing on this thread as I just got back from a trip to the Baton Rouge area. On Saturday I took a day trip up to Natchez, Miss. and can highly recommend it.
Here is a few pics:

Very cool! I hope to hit Baton Rouge. I worked there last year with the Red Cross. Nice place (mostly).

how about caddo lake and a side trip to uncertain, tx... this is a trip i've been trying to make for a while now... very strange area from what i've heard...

the lake is right on the border of tx & la just north of i-20... not sure this link will work but worth a shot...

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.ad...&level=&cat=&address=&city=&state=tx&zipcode=

if you're looking for wheeling, you won't be too far from gilmer which is just north of longview... plenty of info all over about it so i won't waste space...

good luck, safe trip & have fun...

Thanks! Great idea. We may shoot for that Sunday (I think we now have to be at a baseball game in Dallas Saturday). We will probably be staying in Jefferson, so that is pretty close.
