I believe that the biggest problem you are facing here is the spline count. Your '89 should have a 21 spline tranny output shaft whereas the 97 will have a 23.
Now, you can swap the input gear from your old case to the new case, but that requires a complete teardown of the case.
you might have some issue with the speedo mechanism. I think on the older ones it was powered by a speedo cable while the 97 might be elctronic- may want to check if they are swapable.
I know that in the XJ, the t-case went to electronic speedo in '92-3. I found this out the hard way when I bought an AX-15 out of a '91 to put into a '93. The pilot shaft was of different diameter, as well as the speedo mechanism.
