Now that the "clunkers" will be hitting the yards........

No, but I got the speaker pod out of the 97. Did you get the axle shafts? I was just there again today, saw that silver 01.

There was a 97? Must be new. What color? And no, I didn't pull any shafts.

Fortunately, there are eleventy billion additional XJ's that weren't crushed from this program.

The main goal of a salvage yard is to sell salvage parts. If they have the option to keep and sell non-drivetrain parts, they will. I don't think it will be that hard to find a 4.0L engine, a 231, and a D30 in the future.

P.S. To answer the OP's question, swap the power seat sliders with manual ones. They are held to the seat frame with four bolts.

Thanks Markos, I was hoping they'd done that!

I'll be honest, Dad even trying to talk me into clunking his 280k '90 Larado so I had something else to drive while we were fixing things like brakes, u-joints, HVAC, power window and lock problems, exhaust, and tires. Problem is that I just don't have the money for new tires right now because I'm now paying COBRA for my health insurance, let alone a new car even if I was only paying $5k-$10k on it and really feal his Jeep deserves a more respectable death than what the C4C trade would have delt it.

They will send the scrap metal over to China, and it will come back reincarnated as a riceburner economics and take away even more jobs. The cars we drive and the doctors we see will be controlled by the government in the near future. I'm just glad that I'm old enough to have seen the "good old days". We rode our bicycles without helmets and had cars without seat belts.

And rode in the load bed of pick-em-up trucks, and how did we ever survive without cellphones? And we could walk to school, or ride bicycles!

Gawd, I feel old...

Does anyone have a spare black driver side 97+ headlamp bucket? Or even a trackbar.... for my trackbar is bent and my tires are almost gone because of it :\

Hmmmm...this sounds like a pretty screwed Gov't "help" plan. Maybe it'll open a window for enterprising folks to make more OEM-type aftermarket parts. If I had space or know someone who did, I suggest hoarding XJ,ZJ,WJ parts. They may get a bit scarce.

no, they want us all to drive IFS Jeeps, as the JK is not an 'approved' upgrade for your tax dollars.

No, screw that idea.... they want us all to drive little econogarbage:looser:.

I've seen many, many XJs, including a very clean and straight 'gen 2' 2-door i6 with a manual (the coveted NVG 3550), and several older ones with a proper transmission. The ones around here go to Padnos scrap metal- they don't deal car parts, just buy scrap. So there goes a Land Rover (clean!), an El Camino (Clean! a rarity here in MI), and other fine automobiles. :(

I take pics of the carnage. Hopefully my kids will be able to manage their money better than the government. I still don't approve of my tax dollars paying for someone's new fwd tin can. If it were about jobs or the US economy, they'd have a 'buy american' clause based on parts content (some foregin cars would qualify, and some US cars wouldn't) but it's all about control. They want to choose our doctors, they want to choose our cars. :(

:fuse::flamemad:
IIRC that should have been a 2000 or 2001 as I believe hat was the only years they used the NV3550 in the XJ. I think I need my coffee because that just really pissed me off.

Socialist government here we come:twak:. I can't believe people are so goofy to vote in someone who want's to regulate you more.

Thank God for the end of C4C. I too have shown my daughter what a waste it is and apologized for the people voted into government by my peers, as she will end up paying for their stupidity

:patriot:A salute to all the solid axle Jeeps not getting a proper discharge.

I've been buying bricks of ammo. Before they regulate an expiration date to the gun powder. Pretty soon they will probably try regulate how much alcohol you can buy. Oh wait that's been tried before.

Sorry to be off topic but yes the seat base from a 96+ XJ would bolt on. That would solve your seat issue.

Looks like they aren't bothering to spraypaint the axles - at least at my local yards. I couldn't get a good look at the tcase or tranny.

I havent seen any XJ's at my work yet "car dealer" only a few older wranglers and pre 98 grand cherokees. What they do to the motors is pull them into the garage, drain the oil, drive them out where there going to kill them, and park it. Then they make a mix of liquid glass and water, dump it into the motor "oil fill on the motor". After that ther jump in and start'em up with the gas pedel at 2000-3000 rpm and about 3 sec later the motor stalls out and wont start again and eveything in the motor is junk and cant be used.

Really sad but i was hoping for some spare parts.

..yeah here in the Midwest this "Cash for Clunkers " deal is really haveing an adverse effect on the effort to obtain many XJ engine and body parts-My ol 1986 has rusted apart mostly everywhere due to the seasonal phenomena of salting the streets here in winter-I recently attempted and failed to purchase a fairly new 1996 XJ body only from one of the local junkyards because of this vendor's assistance that "the vehicles have to be crushed and shredded to be re-cycled"-In my personal estimation it is already hard to keep our Jeeps running and it seems this oxymoronic policy will soon hasten the limited supply of available replacement parts for all our vehicles-TIA

this way the government can force us all drive smart cars, or a 'large' prius, due to a lack of rwd/4x4 type vehicles, also known as 'evil demonic toxic spewing gas guzzlers'.:anon::skull1:(n):bawl: If they want a real toxic spewer, check your friendly chinese manufacturing facility.

Damn, I'm sad to have done that to my trusty rusty XJ. I've had that since brand new with 12 miles on the odometer and turned it in with 227,000 on the clock (1999 XJ Sport). That rig got me through some fierce snowstorms and crazy commutes in and around Boston. It also scared the pants off me with death-wobbles after my budget boost (fixed through the help of this site!).

That XJ had no leaks, a strong motor and good AW4. The rockers were getting eaten by rust, but I did my best with patches and POR15 and then Herculined them.

It is a sad day and my old XJ certainly deserves better. I just couldn't pass up the $3,500 and I needed something more reliable for traveling with my 9 month old son and 3 year old daughter.

I just really wish the goven't could've inspected those rigs that, like mine, were still very service-able and provided them to folks who needed a helping hand with a car to get to work. Seems senseless to just crush them.

Anyway - anyone near Manchester NH can pull a new set of Brown Dog motor mounts off mine (great product), a C-ROK steering brace, an adjustable track bar, a 1 year old Dynomax cat-back, a set of APN headers, and a 2000 intake with good sensors.

I'm looking forward to my new rig, but I am very sad to see my old work-horse go. It seems such an inglorious end to such a trust-worthy vehicle.

Thank you to everyone on this forum! God Bless!

theres 4 xj's 6 zj's 3 rangers and 3 exploders all at my work, all 3 exploders have the 8.8, 2 are 4:10's with limited slip, other is a 3:73, all 3 rangers are the offroad whatever ones and 2 have almost new 31's, other has a set of 30's. kind of sucks we cant take anything off of these....

Any chance you can tell us what JY they are likely to go to (unless they're being crushed directly)? My local JYs don't bother spraypainting anything except the engine. I have nothing planned for Saturday if you want to go yank the axles out of some trucks and need a hand.

HERETIC!!!!!!!

cliffnotes: I clunked my XJ
Even though your decision made economical sense for you... I have to say, hope you enjoyed my tax dollars.

That first part I picked out is kinda why Dad wanted me to clunk his (only with another 50k on it) and the second part is part of the reason I didn't want to do it, it just deserved better than to get put down that way. Now had it been the Pontiac 6000 he used to own, they could have :explosion for all I cared! I may have more money to play with now anyway, my health insurance just got dropped (I was the last one at the store that had it and the group rate plan I was in decided to give me the old Heave Ho...then inform me 21 days later:shocked::gonnablow) It look like I might be able to get private BCBS coverage for less than my employer and I had been paying through the insurance provider I get my auto insurance through.

All of the clunkers in our town are being crushed. There are 10 or so nice XJ's in line today. Sad, very sad.

Just look at all of them in this local news video.

that video almost made me cry. :bawl:
