any bod know about the amc 20....
i know i would Not waste the time to do a swap for a amc20
- look for a dana-44 from a ~87-88 Xj wagoneer/pioneer trim
(its a direct swap)
+plus the conversion to rear disc brakes from either a Grand-cherokee of liberty parts is relatively simple (and the added benifit of more braking power with larger tires would be a good idea)
an amc20 from a cj is spring under (relocate spring perches)
amc20 is 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern (conversion to 4.5 would be a parts swapping nightmare)
an amc20 has $hitty 2-piece axle shafts that reportedly break more than d35 shafts
an amc20 wouldn't be any stronger than your d-35- imho..
other than a "low" pinion a Ford 9" would be a much better swap, just be sure to find one from a 1/2ton pickup/bronco ~1970s-80, (these have 31 spline axles)
-BUt then the bolt pattern would still be an issue to convert to 5 on 4.5"
(9"fords have 5 on 5.5")
-but you could do the conversion relatively easily by drilling new wheel stud holes in the axle flanges and then converting the rear to disc brakes (a search will find ya multitudes of conversion writeups)
i sold my '99 (85kmile) 29 spline chry8.25 complete axle for $100 when i did my 4.88 gear d44 disc brake swapperoo, i choose to ditch the 8.25 for the d44 because of the aftermarket parts support for the 8.25 suckd, such as lockers & gearing options But that may've gotten better in the last few yrs- i'm not sure i've not researched it lately..
if you opt for a chry-8.25 axle choose one from a 97+ xj--
the older ones had 27 spline axle shafts and wouldn't be much if any improvement over the d35 you have now..
