I know I know.... do a search. I have.
I have an '88 XJ with the vaccum D30 in front.
I have a little money I want to put into it so my question is this....

I want to upgrade the front axle...but I'm not a great welder (I can get around that issue)...

How much money are you talking?

Do you have a front locker?

You won't likely get anything for less than $1000 without doing it all yourself (except maybe running radius arms) and if you don't have a front locker than there really isn't a reason to upgrade anyways.

Nothing is "bolt-in" unless it's already set-up for a XJ, TJ, or ZJ. you might be able to find someone who's upgrading to a d60 and getting rid of a d44, but it still won't be cheap. Otherwise you're building your own axle to some extent. One of the easiest is going to the ford axles as mentioned before and running the radius arms. Get the matching rear axle and your set.

how can the D30 handle 35's but the rear D35 cannot....

One of life's puzzling questions...

since I have the vaccum D30, can't I just use the '95 YJ shafts that have the 297x...
wont that also eliminate the vaccum?

it just can. put 297x shafts in it and it'll take a decent amount of use on 35s

'95 YJ shafts have 297 U-joints and retain use of the vacuum disconnect.
