Jeep dies on reverse

Am not able to get it to shift manually ,
tried disconnecting the black socket near the oil stick ,tried one green connector passenger side back of gloves box still not shifting at all up or down

how to disconnect that TCU and make it shift manually ?

Disconnecting the TCU is simple, just unplug it. It is located in the drivers foot area right above the transmission "tunnel." I would also check and make sure your ground for the TCU is free of corrosion and in good shape. It is located on a stud near the engine oil dipstick.

ok disconnected the TCU and still didn't shift manually

its locked on a gear and not shifting whatever TCU connected or disconnected
from 1-2 to 3 to D up or down NO SHIFTING

is this a mechanical issue in the tranny ?

That does, unfortunately, sound like a mechanical issue with the transmission. At this point I would take it to a specialist to have it completely diagnosed. I am not sure if you have a junkyard near by but a used replacement AW4 should be pretty cheap, and if you take your time shouldn't be too difficult to swap out.

Is the Shift Cable securely connected to the Manual Shift Lever on the left side of the transmission?

~~~~~~~~
Do a simple check to see if the Torque Converter and transmission oil pump are working:
Allow the transmission to cool off over night.
Remove the transmission dipstick and check the fluid level on the dipstick. It should be near the FULL/MAX mark on the dipstick. Clean the dipstick and set it aside.
Start the engine and immediately insert the dipstick then check the fluid level. The fluid level should have dropped to near the bottm of the dipstick.
If the fluid level did not drop to the bottom, the Torque Converter is defective and/or the transmission oil pump is defecive.
if cable is lose it will not reverse also right ?
Can the tyranny go bad just like that ? It was driving fine just needed to replace the CPS , after replacing it it's not shifting
Just checked the oil level before starting , it's near the bent area of the dipstick , after starting it goes between the max and min , it's normal I guess
just opened the oil sump and found that shifting solenoids ****ed up ,2 out of 3 is short circuit already and they melt down ,had 2 original in working condition replaced and its shifting fine now
before i had changed all 3 solenoids with new ones from amazon because i had one original damaged and 4th gear was not coming (although it reads 13 ohm, but when supplying 12 v its not opening and closing)
so i replaced all of them once with the new set from amazon ,turned out to be crappy
so 2 original is back in place one crappy still there and its shifting fine now
thanks alot guys for the help ,
have just 2 questions:
1) how come my tranny didn't shift manually when TCU unplugged ?
2) what makes the tranny go very hot like that even so i have a cooler ?
Temporarily remove fuse 10 from the JB then see if the engine dies in reverse.
Ok I have a 98 xj and it dies in reverse, I pulled fuse 10 and it shifts fine? What's that mean?
98 aw4 4.0 i just got it the guy told me that the NSS went out so he buy passed it, and how ih did that was he cut the wires to the key switch and installed 3 toggle switches flip all three on and its like the key is on, the under the hood he ran a wire to the starter and he put some kind of repay on the fire wall and install a push button starter switch, the only function the key has is it unlock steering wheel. alot of work for 150 part if ya ask me. so i guess it work fine for him for a couple years then he said tranny went bad i asked how he said it dies anytime you put it reverse and then you never know when it will start again and sometimes it dies going down the road, so i bought it for $500. next so i found a 99 with blown motor and i bought a lot of parts i took the ECU, TCU, TPS, mass airflow censor, CPS, all the relays, complete tranny w/converter and transfer case. i put all that on the 98 except tranny Trsf case and i broke the NSS trying to get it off so i took the one on the 98 off and cleaned it and put it back on. still died and ran like shit. so next after a radiator flush, because it looked like muddy sandy water in it, and a much needed engine flush and tune up. motor runs great now, runs down the road great shift great but still dies in reverse, i noticed that all the gauges turn off when it goes in revo, i tried unplugging tcu still the same. so i took out # 10 fuse and it shifts no problem, but threww alot of codes, so i put it back in and unplugged the NSS harness and it works just fine. so i know that the push button starter is ran off the neutral wire ,because when i tried to check the wire coming threw the dash to his relay it turned over the motor, so what im thinking is his NSS was just dirty from the beginning and after awhile it started to work again and thats what s killing the motor, some how his way of bypassing it is ran off the ground and the factory is positive and when they both work at the same time it it grounding out. so my plan is to put all the wiring back to stock if i can and seeing if that will fix it. and if it doesn't im guessing i need a new NSS, oh and i cleaned all the ground wires i could find. what do you think? and if it wasnt all rigged what does pulling fuse 10 or unhooking the NSS plug tell you?
First get all the wiring back to stock, the NSS cleaned and then experiment.
Hint - You will get more and better responses if you write in a coherent manner. You post is a huge, run-on sentence and is very difficult to read.
A little punctuation goes a long way.
Punctuation is very important.
From a teacher -- short and to the point
In the world of hi-tech gadgetry, I've noticed that more and more people who send text messages and emails have long forgotten the art of capital letters.
For those of you who fall into this category, please take note of the following statement:
"Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse."
Is everybody clear on that?
