Frank Z and guys - going to the dark side

Hey Frank and anyone else that can help. I'm posting here, because I appreciate and trust your opinions

Let me first say we still have the Cherokee, but looking for some advise!

Getting ready to send John off to college and was looking for something inexpense to let him take to school to drive. Soooooo - we found a 1988 Wrangler. Really seems to been in pretty good shape, 6 cyl, 5 speed, body good shape - no rust, hard top and doors, new brakes, and 110,000 miles on the clock.

Here's the kicker - the clutch went out, he had it replaced, shop did crappy job, had the clutch replaced again. Shortly, the transmission started acting up, he took it in and it was toast. The guy didn't want to put any more money in it, so it was towed home.
The transmission is in pieces in a box in the back! Needless to say, without a bell housing and tranny, can't fire it up to see how it runs, but the guy said it was running just fine until the tranny went out, about 2 weeks ago.

I understand the tranny was junk, but we were thinking about picking it up and trying to put a tranny in it to get it running. The transfer case is still complete and supposeable is good.

Not planning on wheeling it hard, maybe just a little and mostly for camping. Though about just picking up a used Puego 5 speed at pull-n-save and put it back together.

I don't know, but I can also pick up an AX-15 out of a 91 cherokee for free, not sure if it will fit.

The price is good, figured if we can't get it running, we could still sell it and get our money back, but would really like to make it run, so John has something to drive around school.

Sorry, I know it's going to the dark side, but any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe if we are lucky, we might find someone in the north part of Denver that has some knowledge about trannys and be willing to help us put it back together some weekend.

Thanks to everyone!

From what I've gathered, Jeep clocked the t-cases differently in the YJ/TJ's than in the XJ's. So, that alone would keep you from using the '91 XJ trans.

The clutch hydraulic lines are likely to be different as well and a few years of AX-15's in both XJ's and the Wranglers had external slave cylinders - most had internal.

Lastly, the spline count on your Peugeot is 21 spline - therefore so is your t-case. Swapping to an AX-15 will require you to get a 23 spline t-case.

Another option would be to swap it to an AW-4 auto. Much more reliable and probably more worth the effort if you're gonna change from the Peugeot. You'd need to get onto a YJ forum to get all the specifics on the swap, but I know it's a popular one.

thanks for the reply

it sounds like the 91 XJ trans is out of the question.

It also sounds like the best bet is to find another peugot BA10 out of a 88 YJ to replace this one.

Otherwise it might turn into a nightmare.

Not really looking at building it for wheeling, just something for my son to get around in and do some camping. He's got his built cherokee for wheeling.

Getting the impression that this might get expensive, and may have a hard time finding a decent used tranny. The guy selling it already told me it was going to be very expensive to rebuild the one out of the YJ. And it is now in 100 pieces in a box in the back.

I was wondering if any one knows if a peugot BA10 out of a 88 Cherokee is also clocked different and won't fit in the YJ?

Any help is appreciated!

also since no one brought it up the vacum assisted carb on those where a nightmare

Amen!! Worked on one years ago, NEVER AGAIN!!!

I had TWO of them back in the day, an 88 and a 90. they were both a hassle.
I've been looking at high mileage beaters for my son to be long commute and something like the ford focus can be had cheap cheap cheap.

I thought one of the jeep-things was to retrofit EFI to an older heep??? Beside the point anyway.

Just how far away are you sending this young fella? Are you expecting him to drive this back on breaks? I know what thoughts would be in the back of my mind.

FWIW, I saw a few of the smaller heeps at Western last week, can't hurt ot give them a call. I saw one at pull-n-save also, probably crushed by now, regardless of what it was.
