custom building axles, D60 and Ford 9 questions

i wish we had new england's axle supply. hpd60's go for an easy 1k over here, and they're typically a bitch to find

Because hp60's go for $1000-$1200 around here, now every asshole with a 60 of any kind thinks its worth that. Chevy passanger drop 60 with stock 3.73's, $1000. Dodge lp cad unit bearing $1000. I don't know if people are actually paying those prices, but I see them on craigslist a lot.

saw this on the local craigslist for $400, too much?
"Dodge King Pin Front Dana 60, 4.56 Gears, Dually Hubs"

and this for $500
"I have a 94 f350 single wheel Dana 60 front and a 84 dodge Dana 60 rear axle with matching gear ratio of 3.55 for $500 OBO"

they are both dodge front axles and passenger side drop.
there are 3 60s listed in that post, 2 fronts, and I didn't know Dodge made F350s.

I plan on bringing 3 or 4 with me to Moab in October just for that reason. im hoping to be able to pay for my fuel costs by selling them. im trying to find a couple more 78/79 hp60's because I know ill be able to have instant buyers.

how about this one....
"Dodge King Pin Front Dana 60, 4.56 Gears, Dually Hubs" dodge with king pin?

i talked with a kid i grew up with about his old project truck with an F350 D60 front that he thinks is from an 87, wants $500 for the entire truck. worth it?

Yep, 93 (iirc) and earlier Dodge fronts are king pin. They're passenger drop as noted. 94 and later are balljoint driver drop. My dodge axle is a 92 and either selling in a couple weeks or selling this Sunday at the stafford swap meet, I haven't decided if I feel like throwing it in the truck or not.

500 for that entire truck (Ford of some sort, right?) is decent, if it's in decent shape you can probably make a grand or more on parts, if not, at least 300-400 in scrap. An 87 F350 D60 front is a decent axle, kingpin, not as awesome as the late 70s ones but still pretty respectable especially if you intend to replace axleshafts and such. In fact 3-4 of the local awesome one-ton rigs are based on exactly that axle housing and I have an 87 SRW front 60 sitting in my yard waiting for me to actually put it in my jeep.

ya i would just scrap the truck, i have to go look at it tomorrow and see what exactly is in there. rear is a 10 1/4 i think. lifted on 44s and was pretty cool at one time with a built 460 but has been sitting for a long time. i'll post it on CL i think to see if someone wants the truck but i get the front axle. rather see someone use it than go to the scrap yard.

i ordered all the parts i need from Currie today, should be here in a week or so and then i can start cutting the housing shorter!!

now.... 4 link that bitch or keep the leafs?

if you link it, take the time to figure out the geometry or you'll be redoing it all later. ask me how i know lol

How much? :D

well a box of fun came in for me today from Currie, some R&P gears, fee bearings and what not. next week i want to cut the housing down and start making progress on this finally.

i am not 100% sure what to make the rear width, just keep it the same as a stock XJ or is there any reasoning to go a little wider?

ok here's a question... i'm doing a custom D60 of sorts in the front that will be 8 lug

ford 9 in the back, how do i get the 9 in the back 8 lug? haven't seen axles for them, only 5 to 8 lug adapters that are expensive and kinda sketchy looking.

Personally I wouldn't run a 9" unless it was a true hi-9 or something.

The pinion is way low on those things. And I've heard the stock housings are weak as shit, though I have no experience with that.

there were many housings made over the years, i have one that is similar to a truck housing and it will have gussets on it. unless you plan on jumping the thing it won't be an issue most of the time.
after i get everything set up with a factory housing i plan on getting a Fab 9 of some type, probably a Currie.

any particular year or version of the 60 ro 14? found a local full float D60 for 150 on CL, just pick that up and save for later?

almost have my spider trax 609 done

stripped an old chuck the owner of the shop had laying around to use with a 1.25 true bar he acquired along the way. he will be doing a 9in for his drag nova some time so he was more than happy to let us use this for the jig.

bar put in and ends quickly tacked on for final measurment of everything and to make sure WMS is exactly where i want it along with a center pinion. tomorrow the tacks will be cut off, tube prepped, bar put in and then TIG welded.

For 35" tires throw the 9" in the rear buy some chromo's for your front 30 and go wheel it. Why make things difficult for axles you dont really need?

I agree completely

i have 37s now. besides, it's not as fun if everyone is doing it. if i wanted a wheeling rig i'd save up 8-10g and just buy one already done. this is all about the build

Haha I guess that makes sense. Build looks good!
