Hi,
This is a really old thread but I found a solution to restoring the dash switches.
Take a look here... procedure and photos.

Whatever you do don't paint your switches.
Honda Shin Etsu grease works.

I just got my 1991 tested ... 181,000 miles. Stock.. I'm on the threshold.
15 mph... HC MAX... HC AVG ... HC MEAS... NO MAX... NO AVG... NO MEAS...
...................86.............26................86.............711..............254..............547
25 mph... HC MAX... HC AVG ... HC...
I changed the proportion valve... it wasn't the problem. I have a good used one in my tool bin. If its leaking around the connectors that's another issue.
.
I've kept every smog test report since I bought my Jeep Cherokee in 1991 and started this ritual in 1997.
I can tell you this.. one year they lowered the thresholds.
I don't know if they're GM... but here's the story how I found this can happen.
It happened on both my '69 Chevelle and '69 442 Oldsmobile.. same unibody and brakes shared between platforms. When I was doing the brakes I pushed the pistons back into the calipers... this is acceptable, right...
I swear the more I read this the more it sounds like exactly what I went through. I was ready to throw more money at it - like installing a later model dual diaphragm MC and all the brake mods I could find. Now the brakes are as good as they were in 1991 when my Jeep was new.
Mine is lifted 5"...
I chased brake issues on my 1991 for years. Swapped out every component that made sense.. even installed braided lines and the pedal would still would go to the floor.
Flushed the lines... pressure bled the lines... you name it, I did it.
Then one day, I had it at the dealer to get a few...
I bought some Mothers B2B and it just rolled off the switch.. wouldn't absorb. The bottle indicates not to use on hard or shinny plastics. Wasted $10.00.
The oxidation or reaction is from UV light.. I swapped in new switches when they were still available - these are doing the same thing. I was...
This is second set of OE switches I've had in my XJ since new... Now these are turning white as well.
Anyone know a way to restore these so they a black again?
I'm not interested in spray painting them like the ones I see on eBay.
Thanks
.
I want to thank everyone for their input and offers to help. I asked around at work and one my employees has a close friend that's built several XJ's and actually lives in my area. I have the all tools with exception to one, therefore I'm going to tackle this in my garage.
I have several write...
Good to know... I dread leaving this to someone that hasn't done it before, hence the reason I won't do it myself.
Grimm... is this a weekend task? Or do you have a shop?
.
Anyone know a local shop or dealer they trust that can fix the loose wheel? The torx bolts finally worked their way out... feels like the wheel is about to fall off.
My interior is pristine.. looking for a place that has patience and workmanship to do this right without hacking something up...
Pull the oil and filter out and replace with a Mopar oil filter and Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 oil...
My 1991 4.0L HO runs very quiet with this combination.. no dry starts and you can't hear the lifters at 178K miles.
:NAXJA:
+1 ... a few of my favorites.
I love a good sci-fi flick or horror movie, remember the Night Gallery series and Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black? Also some good ones were Hitchiker horror movies and Duel with Dennis Weaver.
good stuff...
.
Sorry for the long rant / story.. but it's kinda related. You may find this information useful some day...
I live in weird neighborhood... not like the area I grew up, everyone was like family and would help each other out. We didn't need to ask to mow the neighbor’s yard and everyone was...
