Really nice find and it looks to be in great shape. 4x4 for the snow I could see. But other than that I would leave it bone stock. There is no way you could trailer a rig with it and expect your front wheels to stay on the ground.
Id pull the drive shaft put the rear up on jack stands pull the wheels off and feel the pinion bearing... is there play in it? Does it spin freely? Is the pinon bearing bad? id go one step further and pull the diff cover to make sure your gears aren't chewed up. If this all checks out ok then id...
I have a similar problem I been having. There have been a few times I have had to run my XJ with no rear drive shaft. 1st when I did my regear (front axle 1st) then recently a bad rear drive shaft.
When I put my 242 in Part time to give me essentally front wheel drive with no rear drive shaft...
Do you think if you left the door sills and had not cut them out could you have fit the 2x3 up under neigh the door sills? If not could a smaller dimension of box tube fit under the sills?
I like the 2x3 Looks like it support the pillars nicely. Would like to see pics of this project finished. Id like to see how the doors look closed and open...
