Replacing the 00+ coil rail with aftermarket coils

That is exactly what the viper coil does as well.

Hey Talyn new here on the forum really wanna do this mod question can I use a harness from a fuel pump off 98-01 fuel pump saw a video someone doing a same mod was wondering if plug on it would fit as well if not maybe just wiring to extend and I order the plugs ? I have a 2000 XJ I'll be doing this on

I don't know what video you watched, but it is BS. The fuel pump connector isn't even close to matching the rail or viper coil socket.

Not the connector itself just they actual wires I would be using the connectors you posted to order and the wiring from fuel pump to extend.it not where did you order your harness to extend it ? And do I have to create my own lengths or just get a v8 spark plug wires I noticed they look like they have good length to them

The wires I used to extend the harness length were just extra rolls of wire I had from other projects, can't recall the specific gauge off hand. The plug wires are a Universal V8 set that I cut to length... you might be able to get a prefit set of V8 wires to work but I'm pretty sure there'd be a lot of clutter and it won't be nearly as clean looking since there wasn't a specific set of wires for this application. It's not difficult to cut and make your own set like was shown here in the example.

gonna do this to my 2000 that I just swapped a 98 grand engine into -- In researching parts I found that the airtex wiring adapter is more expensive than the viper coil itself

Rock auto wants $41.79 for that silly wiring adapter -- Anyone figured out an alternative

Guess I could just cut off the connector from my wiring harness -- See no real need to keep the stock harness as is -- I will never go back to a coil rail anyway

Exactly, I have a spare 2000 harness, I was just planning to use that coil rail plug portion to extend my existing harness accordingly. From my understanding, the adapter is simply a means of extending the wires harness, without cutting into the stock harness. Not actually being used as an 'adapter' per se really.

I don't recall if this got posted somewhere, but does anyone know:
1. How does the ECU signal each of the 6 coils, with only 4 wires?
2. What is the firing order (assuming you're just doing a straight through harness extension) on the viper coilpack?

I'd bought the coilpack a couple years ago with the intention of swapping it into my GF's XJ (98 motor with a 2000 harness and sensors, with the 2000 coilpack, but the #6 spring was corroded). But for some reason I never installed it, or reinstalled the old coilpack. I feel like I hooked it up but maybe didn't figure out the firing order. I FINALLY, after 3 years of giving her shit for not doing any maintenance, tricked her into fixing all the little stuff that keep piling onto the list of failures/impending failures, and the coilpack and some gremlin TPS issue I think is all that remains to get her XJ minty again.

I think it fires all six coils (wasted spark) so there is no firing order. Don't quote me just yet, I'm not getting any younger so memory sometimes fails me.

As for mystery TPS issues, I've fixed plenty of recurrent "CPS" issues in late models with a simple TPS replacement (symptoms were stuttering and stalling mimicking a failing fuel pump, failures to start mimicking a failing CPS). I now just swap for a known good TPS at the first sign of issues (I keep the sensors off all my parts vehicles/engines for just this reason).

:| Isn't wasted spark real bad for stuff generally, and would cause pre-ignition at least twice per revolution..?

As for TPS, I'd replaced the TPS after we got the first TPS code immediately after doing the engine swap. Entirely possible we got another bad TPS, but I suspect harness as it's very intermittent, and only seems to come back when we're working under the hood and bumping wires.

There is one common wire and a separate trigger wire for each coil, they do not fire at the same time. They do fire twice on each cylinder though!

I'm new to the forum and I am looking for some friendly advice. It's time for a new motor in my 2000 XJ. I want to build a complete motor, then perform the swap. The overall poor opinion of the 0331 head has me considering using an older core with a 7120 head. The lack of mounting points for the stock coil pack on the 7120 has led me to consider the "Viper" coil swap. It looks nice and sounds like a fairly straightforward procedure. I want stock reliability from my new build, therefore I would like to do as few modifications, (preferably NO modifications) except the coil swap. So my question(s) is... 1) Is it really just a matter of cutting and flipping the connector? And 2) will using a slightly older motor cause any major, or even minor issues? The last thing I want is a Check Engine light the first time I turn it over. Thanks.

It's not about flipping the connector, it's about extending it.

The stock coil can be hung off the valve cover bolts. The brackets are simple, if you can use a hand drill ... You can make them. They hang off the valve cover bolts.

Just swap the block/head (with Water pump, alternators, fans, etc). Use the sensors from your stock motor so the connectors in your harness match.

...................

Actually it's both... you have to extent the wiring but also flip the connector that plugs into the Viper Coil... otherwise it won't work. I don't disagree w/the rest of your post.

My understanding is you don't have to flip the connector if cutting and extending the original wiring harness -- just extend as is

You flip if you use the $40 adapter because of how the adapter is made

I have not done this yet, someone please confirm...
