Small Front Mount Elec Fan

Pusher fans are far less efficient at moving air through your radiator than puller fans. The best bet would be to find the source of the overheating. The stock XJ cooling system does a perfectly good job when all parts are functioning properly.

I'm bumping this year old thread because I want to add small electric fans to the front of my rad. My XJ has been overheating so I had the coolant flushed, new thermostat, new radiator cap. But it's still overheating at low speed.

So does anybody have a suggestion for decent small fans and how to mount them?

What radiator cap did you get? What PSI is it rated at?

Some of the parts stores have the wrong cap listed.

It's a 16lb. I found the cause of my overheating today, the fan clutch. Someone on Expedition Portal suggested letting it heat up, shut down the engine, and see if I could move the mechanical fan by hand. It spins easily, even at 222F.

Still, I like the idea of extra fans.

I think alot of people are using the ZJ heavy duty fan clutch. You could always use a solid mount for the summer then switch back to a clutch when it cools off.

the clutch operation is determined by temperature of the air on the face of the fan, not the temperature of the coolant in the engine

Yeah but if the fan isn't hot enough to stiffen the clutch when the coolant is 222F, then when? This was after low speed driving on a trail btw

What about the aftermarket clutches for the ZJ that parts stores sell? Will those be any better than the aftermarket XJ ones? Worth finding a mechanic other than Sears (they won't install parts you bring in)?

What exactly does the ZJ clutch do? Engage at lower temperature?

My Jeep had the mechanical fan only and didn't have an electric fan on the drivers side. After it trying to overheat while offroad, I dropped in to my nearest Autoparts store and dropped in a 10" fan on an switch while in the woods. Overheating was fixed and I could leave it on when I turned the Jeep off and it fixed my heat soak issues too.

I got my fan clutch replaced but still overheating!! The fan still spins easily by hand when the coolant is at 227F. So does the fan clutch get heated by the radiator? If the water pump isn't pumping fast enough to the rad, the rad would also transmit less heat to the clutch, which would explain this.
