Nasty oil leak at the filter adapter

Oddly enough, drove the Jeep today with no oil leak.

Anyone know what size the threads are? I'd like to fix my leak there and replace my torx bolt with a standard size bolt.

No can do 53guy - the bolt is hollow and drilled out to allow oil to flow though.

It's in my writeup (referenced earlier) but when I pulled the bolt out I pulled the T-60 out of a socket, and put a pair of 12mm wrenches about 180* out from each other. That way I was able to apply pressure to both of them and make sure I was turning the bolt, and not applying a side load to it.

I just bought a T60 L-wrench when I had to do my first one. These are shaped just like an allen wrench and have the T60 fitting on each end. They can be found many places on the Internet for about $8.00. I have done two of the torx-bolt O-ring sets with mine and would not do it any other way.

Thanks Jim, shoulda looked into that before I opened my mouth. Great idea on the two wrenches BTW. I planed to just get a t60 socket and tig a 1/4" flat stock bar on the end and call it a day.

It's not just Renix that had the hex heads. My 92 MJ has a hex head.

I did it today. Decided to give it a shot before I paid 100 for it.

Mine required a T70, not a T60. Not sure if thats a 94 thing or not. I bought a T70 socket, and was able to get a 9/16 box wrench around it, duct taped it together, cut off the open ended end and used my hi-lift handle as a persuader bar to get it off.

Took me about 3 hours, and that included the time spent brainstorming tool fab. The large o-ring was very hard, likely what was leaking. I turned on the Jeep, ran it for a few, only got 1 drip and that was from residual oil on the filter from the swap.

This is an easy job, its only one bolt, don't pay for it, I'm glad I didn't.

That's funny, mine started leaking alot more about a week and a half ago.

Gotta do this soon, going to get some orings from the dealer after Christmas.

But first I have to install my drop brackets :)

I noticed I'm still having a drip in the same spot.

What other than the filter adapter causes a drip here, would the rear main or valve cover be the next likely suspect?

When I did my 96, I found a set of torx wrenches (same shape as normal allen wrenches) and that fit perfect. I picked them up at o'rilley auto parts for $10. I was able to slip a pipe over the end of it and had perfect leverage. I tried the sockets but fidling with the right wrench was a pain. With the torx wrench, it took about 15 minutes.

One more strange thing - my "o-ring" that was installed was not broken. It was more of a hard piece of plastic than anything.

it seems like everybody has a different bolt, nut, hex size on their jeep whats up with this? another sick joke by jeep?i have a 93 with a 4.0 HO and it deiently needs a hex not a torx. does anyone know the size as i will have to special order anything above a 3/8 as i can find no one in the portland area that has any bigger.

Mine was 5/8. I cut off a long handle box end that was broken and had been laying around and welded the 5/8 on to get the reach out of it.The bolt came off like a champ. It might have helped that I soaked it in PB for a few days before trying it. I think the o-rings make it hard to remove since it turns easy at first and then gets a little harder.

don't know if you've still got a leak but I did my adapter seals and it turned out to be the oil pressure sensor leaking.

Yep, that was my leak too. Oil pressure sensors are a pretty common source of leaks. Very easy fix!

Good to know, I still have an intermittent leak there, but considering I barely drive the Jeep I haven't been too concerned.

How do I fix it?
