My Heep Project...

My latest progress. I have got the front gears in and set and now put it all back together and under my jeep. This thing is wide! I think Curt was right. Well looks like my brake line are not long enough and I'm going to need some kind of flare if this thing ever wants to see the street. I may need to go to the 6" wide TJ flares for a Rubicon. That is all details, I am really trying to get it together in the next week for a test run and then I will worry about legal issues. Things to do: Waiting on gears for the rear(hopefully today)Put gears in the rear, New brake lines again, build drag link, exhaust, e-brake lines, drivelines should be done today, and shocks. Most of this is already mocked up, but still need final fitting.

Every time you update this thread i want a jk44 more and more. Whats the backspacing on those wheels?

i ENVY YOU!!!

BTR Racing Wheels 17X8 with a 4.25" backspace. So basically they are a 1/4" in from center on either side.

Since the JK axle is wider then stock, wouldn't you have wanted to go with a wheel that was closer to stock? Maybe it wouldn't have been so wide. I like it. But maybe would have gont for 4.5 at the widest. Closer to 5 the better.

Stock JK wheels are 17X8 with a 6" backspace. I have a set with small tires mounted on them for putting this in my toybox. I do not like the look of all the wheel being at the face with no dish in.(if that makes sense what I said) I agree that more backspace would have been good, but wider is not bad either. There was very limited backspacing in my wheel searching. Most wheels want to go to less backspace like 3.5" and 3" and the wheels that do offer more backspace want to go to 5.5 or more. I got frustrated and just got a standard wheel size. I think it is a little exaggerated right now with no flares. I cant wait to get this thing flexing I think it is going to do real well on a ramp.

Well hopefully my next pics will be this thing in action. I still have a lot of final touches and don't want to rush it. Brake lines, exhaust, final bolt check and torque, wiring to the lockers, and a shake down to and from work for a couple of days. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

How is that for track bar and drag link being parallel?

Still need to put the shocks on and run brake lines and vent tube.

I didn't see that you talked about it.....but why don't you flip the tie rod?

Being that your going all out I didn't see why not, unless it interferes with the wheel.

It will not clear the nut on the drag link. There is not enough room on the JK knuckle for the tie rod to be on top. Trust me I think the same thing. I went with 1.375" chromoly for all my steering parts to make up for it and 1 ton ball joints. I can pretty much jack the jeep up by the tie rod, but it would be nice if I could run it on top. I even tried heim joints to see if I could fit those, but there is just not enough room. The drag link got flipped anyway to get my steering angles as flat as possible.

Well here are some photos from the other night. This represents my short lived moment of glory before reality set in. Sorry about the poser shots, but I'm trying to get out and hit some trails soon. Everything suspension wise works very good. I need to get a shorter rear shock with more valving, because right now I am using the adjustable JKS upper shock mount and layed a taller shock down too muck to get it to fit. I know the more the shock lays over the worse it will work. I have a few misc. small leaks and of corse the mystery sound that is not making my life very good right now.

Jeep looks great man, hope you have fun with it, and hope to see you out on the trail one day!!

Looks great.. Are you going to make it this weekend? That would be OCT 3rd thur the 5th.... I hope you find the noise.. I think rusty got most of his done.. I was going to load the trailer till i found i had 3 bad tires, that would have sucked.. Hope to see you out here for the weekend..

Well it looks like I will be making it out to Johnson Valley this weekend for the Search and Rescue run. It sounds like it should be a good shake down and I'm hoping for a good weekend. I have isolated the noise and vibration to my front diff after taking everything apart and putting it all back together. I'm going to check the wear pattern on the ring and pinion tonight and if there is no metal shavings or anything scary I'm going to run it. I'm hoping to try and resetup the gears to quiet them down a little, but if I have to I'm going to try and get Superior to send me a new set. I have read that the new JK gears have had some problems with being loud, but it seems like a hit and miss deal. By the way I think I got my engine running good now. I managed to get a speeding ticket this morning. The cop asked me if I knew how fast I was going and I said NO my speedo is off because I just lifted the Jeep. So he wrote me up for speeding and a fix it ticket to get my speedo fixed. How did he write that, and not a fender flair or mudflap, or no front licence plate ticket? I thought he was going to need two sheets for a fix it ticket for all the stuff I have changed. Anyway I'm getting close, and will be starting on the cage and rock sliders after this run.

Dude... I'm bummed I got home right after your call... usually I would of been home...
I'm glad to hear the kinks are coming out...
Have fun this weekend...

So here is what the patterns look like. I am running off a bit on the coast side. I think I have a little too much backlash maybe 10 thousands. I did not have a dial indicator tonight, but will tomorrow when we reset the gears. Hopefully moving the carrier over a little bit will fix all of this. It is a lot of noise for such small tolerance.
