hey, I should be getting a white 91' XJ just like this soon, and I was wanting to repaint the fenders and bumpers black and get black door handles instead of the chrome ones. I was just wondering what this piece on the jeep is called? (the piece along the bottom of the doors) Does anyone know where I can get black one's or can I just paint them or take them off? Thanks!

That would be "Body Cladding" - I think it's usually called that.
You can probably get black cladding from the OEM, or from a site like Team Cherokee (specialising in XJ parts,) or you could just get rid of it entirely, clean the glue off, and paint the whole damn thing black.
If you paint the cladding, you'll have to use paint formulated for use on flexible trim like that - or it will start peeling and cracking about a week after it's dry. Flexible trim paint is usually more dye-based, and is formulated to saturate into the plastic and also form a flexible coat.
Frankly, I'd just get rid of the stuff. I've got an 88 Laredo that I plan to repaint one of these days (white/grey w/Chrome accents...) using OG507, and replace the chrome trim with blackout trim - including the windscreen frame and such. One of these days...

I'd take it off there and just get apply boxliner on there. Much better looking IMHO, relatively cheap and you can fix any rust spots while your at it.

Door and panel skins are the outside formed sheetmetal parts of the structure.
Boxliner = pickup truck bedliner.

does anyone have any pictures of what that would look like? I couldn't imagine that it would look clean.

I have a pic., but it does not do the 'liner justice. It does not look too bad, especially if you do it in thin coats, not one heavy one. I will try to get a better pic. tommorrow in the daylight. It will stick to just about all metal, if you do your prep work right.

It doesn't scratch like regular paint & I think it looks better due to the texture. It is a little harder to clean. I did mine in Sept. of 03 & haven't needed to touch it up yet. JIM.
