aren't the cj 44's 19 spline? if dana 35's are 27 spline and get bashed constantly, wouldn't a 19 spline axle take the cake?

Depends what year the 44 is,
10 Spline up to 1965
19 Spline 1960-1969
30 Spline 1970 and up
Some of the early 44s had a 1.25in shaft while the newer ones are 1.31in, Dana 35 is 1.16in.
If its 19 spline it may be better just to sell it and get an 8.8, Also Narrow Track CJ axles are too narrow for an XJ. The CJ rear 44 you want is the rare 86 Widetrack. And if you found one of them, then I would sell it and buy and XJ 44. The 86 Widetrack 44 goes easily for $600
