Measuring backspacing?

Does anyone have the right way to measure backspacing?

lay the wheel on the ground..."pretty" side down.

lay a straightedge across the lip, insert ruler/tape etc... and measure from the straightedge to the wheel mounting surface...

That is the backspacing
