How to identify T-case without ID tag?

This T-case has 3 modes, or maybe others are not engaging? I don't know what jeep it was removed from, but it fits my 96 xj 4,0 except for the input shaft which was too long, but has the same spline count. Does digit 3 in double circle mean 1993 or 2003? There are also other symbols on the case, but can they help to determine this t-case type?

Sounds like a 231. 96 was 23 spline right? (I'm not too sure on XJs).
