I have seen mentioned that the Rubicon D44 is not totally a D44. What are the differences? Are the u-joints smaller? Is the hub, knuckle, etc. the same as a D30 and not a D44?

Thanks

Joints are the same, it has D30 knuckles. If you can get a really good deal, at least it would have all the brackets mounted to it. All in all, you'll probably spend less on one you built yourself.

It also has the D30 axle shafts IIRC. The housing and carrier is a 44

A low pinion 44 at that. It has 30 spline inner shafts, same Ujoint as latemodel XJs, unclear on stub ax/hub spline count.

Since it offers no really meaningful strength advantages...and the only 'neat' feature is that selectable locker, I'd rather stick with a hi-pinion (pre-1999) D30 until I could afford to build up something substantial.
