8.8 Advice

Ok...so I'm still learning and this seemed like a good deal to me.

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/pts/2021634867.html

I picked it up for $20. There is work that needs to be done to it but did I make a mistake? I think the gearing is 3:73 and I think its set up for drums. Am I able to find the parts for disk setup at a JY or will I need to get a new setup? Any advice that could be sent my way would be great. Thanks

Chuck

Pull the cover make sure it has 31 spline shafts see what diff it has. Does it matter to you what ratio it is. If you want the ratio it has and its got the right parts then brakes aren't a big deal. Iirc you can swap disc on it easily. If its not what you need then see if you can find a better one. But don't get rid of it till you do. Even if you have to set it up you only paid 20 for it

So how do do I know what gears I have on my XJ? I have a Dana 35. Its all stock. Im still trying to learn this gearing out. Wouldnt it be better to go to discs? And do I need to regear the front?

I have 31's....looking to go to 33's and its an automatic. Right now I do not plan to do any crazy hardcore wheeling/crawling, but at some point would like to. I ran across this while searching craigslist and thought that i would be stupid to let it go. With it being $20. If it doesnt wind up working out for me its ok. Its only $20 and I'm sure I can make that back. Like I said...33's are probably as big as I'm gonna go for right now as it is my daily driver. Just thought this would be a good project to better my XJ and expand my knowledge.

the 8.8 is a great choice, but considering the cost of a re-gear, I would look for one with 4:10's and discs already. They can be had for 150-200 complete at a j/y. Thats as much as a new ring an pinion, with no install.

3:73 would work for your 31's, but you will regret it when you jump up to 33's
And yes you will need to re-gear the front also before using you 4wd again, so figure another $500 for gears and set up for the front. Starting to see why doing it once is much cheaper?

Most likely it is 3:55, most of the oddly optioned XJ are the early years. But check your front and rear diff for an ID tag. If that doesnt work pull the cover of your choice and count the ring and pinion teeth, divide the ring by the pinion and you will have your ratio.

That being said, going from 3:55 to 3:73 isnt going to be worth the cost involved.

did he relocate the spring perches? if its spring over and he didnt put them there then its a ranger 8.8 and will have 28 spline shafts. there is the very slight possibility if its a ranger 8.8 it could have came from an fx4 4.0 ranger and it would still have 31 spline shafts, although its very unlikely. def pop that cover off and pull a shaft to see what spline the shafts are

Thanks for the info. I haven't had time to take the cover off yet but this is what was written on the diff tag:

SB06D
08 8 8 9L06

Does anyone know how to decipher this?

The spring perches are on top and it doesnt look like the guy I bought it from put them there. So lets say hypothetically that this is a 8.8 that has 4.10 in it (maybe im missing the point or delusional) would it be worth keeping and changing my front to match and finding the discs for it or start over and find one at the j/y?

I appologize for my ignorance....I really am trying to learn.

if it's 4.10s it would be worth it to keep, if it's infact 3:73's paint it up make it pretty and sell it off to make some money for the next axle.

Rear axle codes can be found on the Safety Standard Certification label attached to the left drivers side door lock post. The code appears as a number or letter/number combination in the 'Axle' column of the label. The axle can also be identified by the tag on the axle differential cover bolt. See the diagram above to learn how to read the tag.

Given this chart and the tag on the diff:

SB06D
08 8 8 9L06

I am still lost. I cant figure this out.

Measure the distance between the spring perches. They are on the top witch means it's not from an explorer or some one already changed them. If its not from an expo paint it and sell it. It looks like some info is missing from the tag that you posted earlier. Were it says 08 8 8 it mine said 4L10 8 8 is it possible you missed some thing or it dirty and covered. It should say pretty clear whats inside. Like 3 73 8 8 or 3L73 8 8. The first three numbers are the ratio. If there is an L in the ratio its lsd. 8 8 means 8.8

Ok well when I looked the tag was still on the diff and it was covered by the bolt. Took it off and all I can see is a 3. The perches also are mounted on the top. So this is something I need to clean paint and sell huh?

So if it says 3 08 8 8. Than its 3.08 open 8.8 they did offer 3.08. My guess would be its out of a ranger or an aerostar and that's why he didn't use it. Hate to say it but its not worth it.

There is no way I could tell you how much its worth from this far away. I can say you never trade dollars. If its in better shape when you sell it its worth more. You paid twenty sell it for more than you have into it.
