The bearing and hub is one assembly. It's called a "unit bearing". Search for it here, there is a TON of information.

Unless you have a 2wd... then you just have wheel bearings.

The unit bearings are exactly the same for 2 and 4 wheel drive cherokees. I even second guessed myself and checked the part numbers while writing this post.

Oddly enough my FPM shows a servicable bearing for 2WD, at least to 90....so the question is..is it 2X or 4X? And what year?

That's interesting. I'll admit I clicked "1991" in the part search, not really thinking about year.

I can confirm that there are 2 different designs on 2wd axles. My '89 2wd MJ had spindles and hubs w/ serviceable bearings. The later ones use a 4wd unit bearing with a short stub shaft to provide bearing preload. As a side note, these 2wd stubs are useful for trail repairs if you break a shaft and need something to hold the UB together while limping off the trail.

Indeed, I used to have one of those hubs - thats why I was so sure they are the same design. :)
I was unaware they used to use a spindle.. that's interesting.

I haven't had the hubs apart on my 88 2wd MJ yet, but just looking at it I can tell it's significantly different.
Has anyone seen diagrams or service info for the 2wd hubs?
Also, I started this thread about them a few days ago: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=103003

its 4wd, but i thought u can open the hub ass. and take out the old bearings and seals and put in new or do i have to buy new hub ...the price difference is huge, bearings $48 each side + seals for bearing or $175 each side give or take for the whole hub, so im just tryin to save money here, shit id love to just buy the whole hub but im low on cash:/!

You cannot disassemble the unit bearing, it must be replaced.

Timkens mentioned here for $75, that's a good deal; http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?p=978319

75 is insanely cheap, about half of what they cost around here.

x2.
I've got one starting to go, and the cheapo BCA bearings are $110, timkens $144

I've gone through 4 timkens, only bought 2 and used the warranty on the others. Pretty sure next time around i'll have to buy some more which i hate doing. 300$ more into this turd is not what I want to do.

I recently got my Timkens from the same parts connection as Cal. They've gone up a bit...$86.

that's still a good deal, you should see if they'll hook you up on group buys and help the NAXJA community. a lot of people would gladly pay a lil over $100 for those.

I need to find a source on 30 spline timkens at that price. :)
We buy those bearings from a local parts store who's manager is a member of SoCalXJ. I'm pretty sure he'll happily provide them to any naxja member, but they don't do mail order.

Don't do it. I got my last set from ebay and they were crap. C'mon, you're in Temecula. Make the short drive to Orange and get the Timkens.

Junkyard hub assemblies are about $15. You can get 10 of those for a new one.
In fact, I have had no problems with junkyard hubs.
