Xj frame crack welding help ...!

Wire size and settings will be determined by the welder.

I use .o30 wire for almost everything

My welder is only 115v so I crank it up as high as it will go with a slow wire speed to get the most out of it

You need to grind that area down with a flap disc on an angle grinder until it is nice and smooth and flat.

XCMs suggestion is a good one

Slowing wfs actually decreases the heat input since it is directly related to amperage.

You need to remove the box, the sway bar bushing and sway bar, and clean that entire area up and prep for welding. weld that thing nice and hot , if 110 go as high as you can go, if 220v dial it in. Then plate the frame under , inner, and outside. add gusseting and more plating too to reinforce it consider adding additional bolts through the frame through and under, and maybe some riveting too in addition to welding and plating it.

That kit is good for preventing the crack you have, but since it's already cracked, I don't think it's enough by itself.

You need to weld the crack, then plate over it. A search for "front frame stiffeners" on here should get you some decent results with an idea of what we're talking about.

thanks i will check

The kit is a good one but I think you need some custom repair work on that if you want it to be reliable. It needs a doubler on the bottom and both sides of the frame in the area of the gearbox.
Plate the bottom and sides of the frame up to about 10" from the steering box. Use plenty of rosette welds to ensure good strength.

Listen to Jeeperjohn, he has the right answer.

To repair similar cracks and damage, I have used similar kits along with a piece of 3" X 1/4" mild-steel strapping, running along the bottom of the frame from the front bumper bracket to the track bar bracket. The 3" strapping is bent to fit, then bolted, using all available holes and welded to the new steering box plate and rosette welded to the frame. The sway bar bracket is then mounted on the new strap, using the Factory threaded holes.
Make sure any kit contains a replacement for the inside steering box mounting plate. The stock cast plate is junk.

Welding to the frame can be tricky due to the multiple layers of stamped sheet metal. It is easy to burn through or not connect all the layers,
The sheet metal is coated and must be removed for good results.
It is really best from your own safety viewpoint, to find a skilled welder, it is very easy to screw this up.

Do you have access to welding and fabrication equipment? There are braces that can be put on that will help but given the state of your frame I don't think they would be enough.

Here are two kits.
The C-ROK plate is a simple bolt-on piece that can also be welded

This plate kit is the better of the two and requires a more complicated installation but will do a much better job of repairing the frame.
You will have to find a welding shop.

Good luck with the repair and safe driving.

Do you have any heavy industry nearby?
Shipyards, large truck repair shops, muffler shops?
I would try and befriend someone there

There has to be someone there with a welder.

Worst case, you could order a $100 harbor fright welder.
