Those are collapsed lengths

Thank you for all the info.

I ended up getting a Rugged Ridge SYE so we will see how long of a DS I will need when its installed.

It's never as simple as we would like it to be huh

OK, I will be asking again about a DS when the SYE goes in. I don't known of anyone who has 4.5 to 5" of lift that does not need a SYE so I feel OK with this upgrade. Weather it fixes the problem or not.
So when I take my measurement I assume that I take it on the ground with the full weight of the Jeep on the suspension then measure from the differential to the TC pinion. So is the DS fully collapsed, mostly collapsed? What measurement do I use for the DS?

Just some info if anyone is interested.
Anyway regarding the shafts, you need one which fits your Jeep based on lift height, rear axle, and transmission. Lift it, remove rear shaft, measure between the SYE yoke and the pinion yoke, subtract 1.5" and look below
Code:

The A500 was later renamed the 44RE. w/o CV means there is a single-cardan joint at both ends.

That DS info is the collapsed lengths. Take the measurement after you install the SYE. Jeep on the ground. That measurement subtract roughly 1.5" or so and look back to the list.

Example:
Your measurement = 33" - 1.5" would be 31.5"

Then any of these would work
31.250" ZJ 96-98 5.2L 44RE w/NP249 52098379
31.250" ZJ 98 5.9L 46RE w/NP249 52098379
31.250" ZJ 96-97 4.0L 42RE 52098850

Those numbers in bold will be stamped on the DS on a little sticker.

Like many others. I have ~6" lift and use a front XJ DS from an auto.

Hope that helps :) :)

Yes, very much, thank you.:sunshine:

So how do you get that bolt out of the top of the TC? Man that thing is buried.
Looks like all three of the bearing are shot and will be replaced. Also the tranny mount is toast, the rubber has separated and now it is two pieces.

If you haven't already. Put a jack inter the crossmember and drop all four crossmember to frame bolts and lower the drivetrain a bit. That should give you enough room to get a wrench in there

So I pulled the TC out and found that the other two bearings were a little loose/wobbly so I sent it to the machine shop to have them replaced. They did not do a pukka job. There was a gritty sound when you spun the bearings and they never did clean the TC so all the dirt on the outside got into the grease.
So that took two more days to get it back and I was busy all weekend so no progress was made getting it back together and installed.
I did grind off all the hydro searing brackets that were so skillfully welded and reinforced so I could put in a simple steering stabilizer shock. PITA.
Welded up the passage side UCA bracket and got it installed and ground off some other brackets that were not needed.
So next week install the TC, bolt up the TC skid and get a rear DS.
I have M300 bearings (mean high maintenance) in the D30 and I was told they need to be greased every time it goes wheeling so I got a needle grease injector for the grease gun and just need to find that little indent in the U Joints and push some grease in I guess. Anyone else running these?

sounds like its coming along! nice skipper!

Check with Thomas today and he still hasn't put in the TC :bawl:

Told him that if its not in tomorrow I wont have time to get and install a DS and work out any of the kinks that always come up. :explosion
