Bad luck continues, just drove down the hill from hisperia and my ac clutch is sounding like a bunch of rocks in a garbage disposal. Before I spend my life savings wanted to see if by chance someone had one or knew where I might get a deal on one. Cheapest I have found is 200 for a reman. Any help is appreciated.

hey guys, just reading thru these messages. came accross yours and was wondering if u could give me some advice. im pretty sure my 99 XJ has the same problem, ac clutch going out, or just about done. is this thing fairly simple to change out? its my wifes daily driver, so im getting a lot of grief about how shitty it sounds.

can't replace the bearing john, its the whole clutch assembly. I think you need a special tool to get it off the compressor.

richcampos if its making noise change it NOW. if the whole deal seizes up it will throw the belt off, and no belt means no water pump.

im gonna look for one and hopefully get it changed out this week. any suggestions besides the junkyards? dont want to have to replace the whole compressor.

You definately need some special tools to pull the clutch. The clutch is about 200 and a rebuilt compressor is 225. If you change the compressor you should change the reciever drier too. You should get the freon recovered and then will need to get the system evacuated before you can charge it with freon.

here is a link to sanden's compressor tech manual http://www.sanden.com/index.php?id=MTExOTk3OTEwNw6

I ended up just buying a new one, took the old one off and could barely turn the pully by hand. I was tracing the cause of my crappy milage, I think that may have been a lot of it. Was a simple swap other than the bolt that I snapped off leaving me with only 3 bolts holding the compressor in. AC is ice cold now, lot of good it will do me in washington lol

If you dont care about the AC working you can change the clutch only. It unbolts with 8 or 10 little bolts to the compressor housing. As to the best of my knowledge all the clutch units are the same (at least renix to mid HO)

OBA is so fun, had my compressor apart a few times ;)

Paul, when you gettin up here ?

Driving my jeep up the end of the month, then I'll officially be there in December

Naw I tried an easy out with no sucess. Eventually I'll drill it completly out and use some thread inserts(forgot their name) but it seems pretty secure with just the 3.
