New Cherokee press -NAXJA represented!

I get liking the grand but to bring your faith back in jeep? That's a stretch.

That is the cool thing about opinions Ryan! Everyone gets their very own!!!

I like the new cherokee, do I like the look better than the XJ, no. However, compared to all the other modern SUVs out there I do like it and if I were in the market for a brand new SUV that would be on top of my list from what I've seen.

How many threads here about MPGs and the top answer being the XJ is a brick, now we have a more refined aerodynamic shape and people hate it. The headlights get made fun of yet everyone wants modern lights in their XJ. Its all personal opinion and of course on an enthusiast forum we are all biased towards the reason we are here. However, come on people, comparing a very old style vehicle design to a brand new one isn't fair. Of course the fans of the original are likely not going to like change and we are surprised why?

When I bought my XJ it was from the second owner and it had never been offroad and only put in 4x4 to test it twice in its life. That is the market Jeep seems to be going after so of course it won't be the potential beast of an off road vehicle many here would want. Guess what, its not being made for you then, look for something else, no big deal.

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this excerpt from the article above....

"......the Cherokee is based on the front-wheel-drive chassis of the Dodge Dart......."

Just does not seem right..... :twak:

Those two vehicles, he said, are the ones that continue the brand’s go-anywhere tradition. And while he understands that most buyers don’t take their four-wheel drives off the pavement, he does wonder what enthusiasts like him will turn to when the supply of original Cherokees dries up.

You know, when I logged into the forum today, this is exactly the thought that was on my mind... after the cherokees are gone, what's next? By the looks of that vehicle, they shouldn't have named it the cherokee, they should have named it "reservation" or perhaps "indian casino". Seriously, what would that new cherokee look like with a winch, a roof rack and shovels mounted all over it?

I was having a conversation with another naxja member the other day (one who currently doesn't own an XJ) and we were contemplating the eventual replacement of the platform. For the moment, I currently have 4, two renix, two HO, so I have replacements for the bulk of the parts, I bought them with the eventual plan being using one as a sacrificial donor for the other, or a place to put all those aftermarket parts just in case the unthinkable happens.

I'm thinking more and more that the answer is going to be a medium sized 4x4 pickup. I'm not really sure I'm looking forward to that day, but I'm sure it will come way before I am ready.

I watched Motorweek's review of it. The first thing they said was how the jeep purists hated it. After watching the episode my thoughts were...ok. It looks like a decent cute-ute. Better than the competition. It's still ugly and it shouldn't have been called a Cherokee. A new liberty, fine. A new compass or patriot... Fine. Just not a Cherokee.

What I've been saying.....it's a Jeep that is built on a Dodge Dart platform. 100% new platform needed a new name. I submit that they selected the Cherokee name due to it's popularity and in hopes that it would help generate sales of this new car through recognizable branding.

From the Fox news review:
Optional blind spot alert, land departure warning, radar cruise control, and a self-parking system,..
"Land departure"? What does that mean?
Does it beep at you if you hang a tire?
Is it if you roll off a cliff?
Is there a check box on the order form for the Delorean hover conversion?

..,or is it a poorly edited and spell checked article that's supposed to say "lane" departure.

Don’t worry, adventure guy, you can be sure that Mopar and all of those Jeep outfitters out there will soon be selling plenty of accessories to make it even more capable, but the factory truck appears to have earned its Trail Rating, not to mention the Cherokee name.

From what Ive seen of the mall...er...trail rating system, it's more about the badge and sticker price and less about the capabilities. It's not a real confidence builder in my book.

What I've been saying.....it's a Jeep that is built on a Dodge Dart platform. 100% new platform needed a new name. I submit that they selected the Cherokee name due to it's popularity and in hopes that it would help generate sales of this new car through recognizable branding.

They try to lure in loyalists to the badge, yet they depart completely from the product they are attempting to emulate.

Personally I think that the marketing people looked solely at sales numbers, saw a huge production run, and thought it easier to try to ride the coattails of a capable machine, than work on getting this "new" product onto the market on its own merits. That makes me feel misled.

Anyone else see the Chevy Nova of the 80's when they look at this thing? I can only hope they get wise (like Chevy did with the Nova) and come up with "Prism"-like replacement name. Hopefully the car isn't a total lemon. (Like the Liberty, Patriot and Compass.)

From some of the youtube videos I've watched, it doesn't look too bad off road. Stock for stock, probably close to what our XJ's can do with a good limited slip, there just won't be all that easy to mod for better capability like our XJ's and for power, especially if the electronics are locked down like the rest of the current Chrysler vehicles (still waiting on a tuner for the 3.6l 200 and Avenger......) Like I've said before, itnreally should have been called an Eagle as it'll be one of the most off road capable cars currently on the market. Still would like to see a light-ish 4dr unibody wagon with the 3.6l engine, 8-Speed, modern 231, 242, and Rubi t-cases, and some variation of the JK suspension and axles.
